Greetings to Alumni of All Schools,
While experiencing the beauty of fall, the change of colors and all that this time of the year has to offer, you certainly can't beat the weather. The past several days have been awesome.
As the change of seasons is now upon us and we look forward to All Souls Day and Thanksgiving Day, we pray for the souls of those who have died; family members, friends, and former MMC employees who we fondly remember. We are thankful for so many gifts including the people in our lives who love us and care about us.
A special congratulations goes to Mary Pistulka, C'75, who was one of only 50 (one from each state) home health and hospice nurses out of thousands, who was recently recognized as the overall national winner as the 2014 Home Care and Hospice Nurse of the Year recipient (story below). Certainly, this is a well deserved honor for Mary and one which MMC, Sacred Heart Monastery, and Avera Sacred Heart Hospital are all very proud.
Sincerely,
Dave

  | Fr. Thomas' work in progress |
 | Bede Hall crown molding...after |
MMC's Chaplain - Serving the Campus Community
Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB, C'79 has been the Chaplain of Mount Marty College since 2009.
Fr. Thomas strengthens MMC's Catholic Benedictine identity through ministry, leadership and service as well as embracing the spiritual formation of students through socialization and one-on-one mentoring. In addition to Fr. Thomas' many responsibilities, he enjoys painting and gardening in his spare time and it allows him to give back to his alma mater as well. Fr. Thomas has worked with Sr. Matthew, quietly planting and maintaining the plants and flower beds at Sacred Heart Monastery and the MMC campus for several years.
Just a few of his excellent painting projects include: the MMC President's Office, the Vice President's Office, numerous staff offices, nursing offices and Bede's first floor exterior windows. He has also completed numerous projects in Roncalli Center including "The Raven", hallways and entryways, and many other areas on campus. Most were standard painting projects, however, a few included sponge painting techniques as well.
Fr. Thomas' main goal over the holidays and through 2015 if possible is to paint all the hallways and entryways in Bede along with the trim work in the main entry and up the staircase. This will involve some intricate painting due to the custom trim work in the building.
The MMC student body, faculty, and staff are very appreciative not only for his spiritual leadership, but for his talents and generous time contributions in keeping the campus beautiful both inside and outside. As Fr. Thomas says with a smile, "There are many other things a priest likes to do and can do and I just want to enhance the beauty of this iconic building and the landscape."
There has been interest and inquiries from some alums to assist financially in the restoration of Bede Hall as a historic building. If you would like to contribute, please make your check payable to the Mount Marty College Bede Project and mail to Alumni Relations (the address is above). Your contribution is very much appreciated.

NAHC Recognizes Hospice Nurse of the Year
National Association for Home Care & Hospice Annual Mtg.
The 2014 Home Care and Hospice Nurse of the Year award was presented to MMC Alum Mary Pistulka, C'75 during one of the general sessions of NAHC's Annual Meeting & Exposition in Phoenix, AZ earlier this month. Mary Pistulka, RN, BSN, CHPN, Hospice Coordinator has over 26 years experience as a hospice nurse with Avera at Home in Yankton and was highly praised by her employer. The Home Care and Hospice Nurse of the Year is determined based on a national vote that includes nurses from all 50 states. Those 50 nurses are chosen by a selection committee that reviews all the submissions across the country and chooses the top nurse from each state. Pictured above, this year's award was presented by Andrea L. Devoti, Chairman, NAHC Board of Directors (left); Mary Pistulka (center); Denise R. Schrader, Chair, Home Healthcare Nurses Association (right), and NAHC President Val J. Halamandaris (not pictured). Congratulations Mary! Alumni News Cassie Arens, C'11 Cassie Arens says becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) was an easy choice to make. She is the newest member of the Wausa Medical Clinic having completed her certification testing as a Physician Assistant.
Arens is originally from Scotland, SD and now she and her husband Ashton farm just north of Crofton. "It's a bit of a drive to work," said Arens, "But in that 20 miles, I have plenty of time to unwind and think about my day."
Arens graduated with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, then attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she completed her degree in Physician Assistant studies.
Mary Hilfiker, C'72 MMC alum Mary Hilfiker has been working for Iowa County Palo Alto for fifteen years - seven years in the auditors office and then was elected for two consecutive terms as the Palo Alto County Treasurer.
In honoring the commitment she made to the county residents regarding term limits (2), her term will end December 31, 2014. She is now running for the County Supervisor seat for District 5. Just a few of her goals and issues include improving city/county relationships, increased support for local law enforcement agencies, continued support of county conservation, as well as bonding priorities for roads, drainage concerns, and mental health needs.
During her time as treasurer, she invested the county tax dollars safely and securely, making over a million dollars in interest.

Within God's Sight
Book of the Living
There is a tradition in the Church of enrolling our loved ones in a "Book of the Living" and remembering them in our daily prayers and Masses. We'd like to remember your loved ones in our campus Masses and prayers throughout the month of November. Once again this year, a "Book of the Living" with the names of your loved ones will be enthroned in The Raven, our Campus Ministry area.
Please email us the names of those you would like included in our "Book of the Living." We will remember them in our prayers and Masses. In addition, you can also give a gift in memory or honor of your loved ones if you wish. |
Alum Spotlight
Mary Lee (Hochstein) Villanueva, C'96 Choosing a college for Mary Lee was not an easy decision since she grew up in a small town and was not used to large cities and big campuses. She also was looking for a college that would give her a great education, but would also foster other interests such as music. Mary Lee looked at numerous colleges before she chose to enroll at Mount Marty College.
The college was large enough to offer everything she was looking for in an education and personal growth, but not so large that she became just a face in the crowd. Her professors knew her by name and truly cared about her as a person. At Mount Marty, Mary Lee was able to enjoy and nurture her musical talents while succeeding at her major and planning for professional school. MMC was the perfect size for her. As she states, "my decision to attend MMC was a decision that continues to pay dividends."
During Mary Lee's four years at Mount Marty, she says that all of her professors influenced her life in so many positive ways. Without their guidance and instruction, she would not be where she is today including her musical endeavors such as band and the annual Spring Musical Tour. Even though composition and literature were not Mary Lee's favorite subjects, without them, she could not have written the countless research papers and personal letters for medical school and residency applications. With that being said, she adds, "I need to thank all of my professors and every person at Mount Marty for being influential in my life. Without the entire campus community, and the good Lord's direction, I could not have completed my degree and moved on to the next phase of my life. I want to give thanks to everyone at Mount Marty for the experiences, the memories and my education."

New Look and Name for Riverside Stadium
Phase One of placing artificial turf on the infield of the now called Bob Tereshinski Stadium is complete. With the MMC Lancers baseball team and the Yankton Baseball Association playing their entire home schedule of over 200 games at the newly renovated stadium, the need for permanent turf was a major piece of the puzzle.
Phase Two will involve raising funds to install artificial turf on the remaining portions of the field. The total cost of Phase One was estimated at nearly $230,000 and Phase Two is $296,000 with a total project cost approaching $526,000.
