Greetings to the All School Alumni,

Dave Dickes '76

As I see the fall athletes returning back to campus, it's hard to believe that the first day of classes is just 10 days away. This past summer seems like a whirl-wind tour.

But, one last summer celebration culminates this weekend, one in which the vendors can't wait to get

set up and the visitors from the surrounding towns can't wait to get there, that's Yankton's Riverboat Days. The Board of Directors and local volunteers over the years have done and outstanding job promoting the Yankton community and this great event. Every year it seems like they out do themselves, new events are added and it's another "home run" for the community.

If you have not had the opportunity to attend Riverboat Days you owe it to yourself to do so. The City of Yankton certainly puts on the hospitality, the food is fantastic and the vendors have said this weekend is one of the best shows they attend year after year. Come on down to Riverboat Days, look for MMC in the parade and join us at Alumni Central in The Loft @ The Landing (104 Capitol St./east of the Ice House) from 10am to 6pm for a complimentary beer or soft drink and snacks. Also, check out the Alumni Events section below for additional information.

MMC Has 14 Programs Named NAIA Scholar Teams

Fourteen athletic programs at Mount Marty College were recognized in July as an NAIA Scholar-Team, based on academic performance.

The team grade point averages for the 2013-14 Lancer programs were: women's basketball (3.75/which is #1 in it's category), women's tennis (3.71), softball (3.60), woman's golf (3.55), women's outdoor track (3.54), women's cross country (3.50), men's cross country (3.49), women's indoor track (3.44), women's soccer (3.37), baseball (3.26), men's indoor track (3.25), volleyball (3.21), men's outdoor track (3.16) and men's golf (3.04). For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes. The average GPA for all MMC athletes is a 3.279 and 72% of the athletes had a cumulative average above 3.0.

Weston Swanson, C'13

A new school year is beginning this week for many students and they'll be greeted by some new faces in the classroom. Weston Swanson, native of Walthill, NE, will be filling a Social Studies position at Lyons-Decatur. He will have seventh through twelfth graders in his classroom and will also be assistant coaching on both the girl's volleyball and basketball teams.

"I took the job because I know that there are a lot of great caring people that work in the Lyon-Decatur School District. I also could tell that I would have a lot of support from the Lyons-Decatur community which I'll be living in," said Swanson.

College Recognizes LPN Grads

The Mount Marty College nursing program held the Pinning Ceremony for the August 2014 graduating Practical Nursing students on Friday, August 1,2014.

The pinning ceremony at MMC began in 1986 for the BSN program and in 2012 for the Practical Nursing program. The purpose of the event is to acknowledge the achievement of the graduate as they transition from the student role to the practice role. The nurse's pin incorporates the philosophy of the school and of the nursing program. The presentation of the pin represents a sending forth or commissioning of the students to begin their nursing careers as graduates of MMC.

Tradition defines that the nursing pin is unique to the nursing program from which the student graduates. In the past, a nurse's cap and pin represented the school from which he or she attended. Today, MMC's pin remains as the lone symbol of their education.

Mount Marty College Nursing Program is proud to acknowledge this year's August Practical Nursing graduates: Latasha Boucher, Springfield, SD; Melissa Burge, Gayville, SD; Amy Johnson, Yankton, SD; Nathan Porras, Crofton, NE; and Judy Shelby-Tech, Yankton, SD.

Ken Kocer testified before U.S. Senate Banking Committee MMC Official Shares Views With D.C. Lawmakers

Ken Kocer, President of the South Dakota Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and Director of Financial Assistance for Mount Marty College for the past 23 years, recently had the opportunity to talk to lawmakers in Washington, D.C. about student loans at private colleges. On July 31, Ken Kocer testified before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee on those issues.

Senator Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), who is the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee Chairman, invited Kocer to testify after talking with him during a conference call about his opinion on certain private loan issues.

During his testimony, Kocer talked about the federal student loan program being the very best program colleges can offer students. Federal student loans include the availability of subsidized loans for some borrowers, multiple repayment plans, and options for loan forgiveness. The Federal Direct Loan program additionally offers deferment and forbearance options, consolidation opportunities and overall lower interest rates.

But there is a dark side to the program, Kocer said.

MMHS Class of '59 MMHS Class of '59 Reunite
The Mount Marty High School Class of '59 could not attend the MMC All School Reunion at the end of June due to scheduling conflicts, so 17 of their classmates reunited August 7th in Yankton.

They had lunch together while sharing information, stories and pictures. In the afternoon the group was invited to the Sacred Heart Monastery and met with Sr. Ann Kessler, Sr. Kevin Irwin and Sr. Marie Helene Werdel for coffee, which according to several classmates, brought back a lot of memories.

In the evening they met together for dinner at Minerva's where spouses who were in attendance were introduced and it turned out to be a fun evening.

Several classmates who could not attend sent information for sharing with the group. Unfortunately, two of their classmates, Diane Deniger Peterson and Bernadette Goeden Heaton passed away since their last get together.  However, as Shirley McCloud stated, "It was a great day, we had a great visit."

Seated in the picture above from left to right are: Fran (Bigelmeir) Lowenstein, Charlotte (Shreve) Lema, Sandra (Bogner) McDonald, Darlene (Rezac) Kolda, and Edwyna (Topf) Fuelbeurth.  Standing in the middle row from left to right are: Mary Francis (Heine) Arnes, Carol (Hochstein) Paltz, Rosemary (Nelson) MacKeen, Leah (Heimes) Smith, Christine (Kuchta) O'Brien, and Mary (Hanten) Kleinschmidt.  Standing in the back row from left to right are: Judi (Schmidt) O'Connell, Shirley (Schulz) McCloud, Beth (Battin) Freidel, Genevieve (Goetz) Taevs, Mary Ann (Drotzman) Kathol, and Eileen (Mueller) Witkowski.
