Greetings to all Mount Marty Alumni,
I'm always happy to see the month of March arrive for a couple of different reasons. First of all, the weeks and months of cold and snow usually seem to start coming to an end, which means spring is right around the corner. During the month of March, we also observe/celebrate St. Patrick's Day which commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. St. Patrick's Day at MMC was and still is a mid-semester time of celebration. Whether you're Irish or not, we send the following Irish Blessing to all our MMC Alums around the world: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and rain fall soft upon your fields. And, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Please feel free to contact me at anytime. Dave

Alum Spotlight
Tim Eixenberger,
Class of 77
|
If you ask Tim Eixenberger, a 1977 MMC graduate, what effect Mount Marty College had on his life, his response would be that it's so easy to get distracted or venture down the wrong path in life particularly as a high school graduate. What MMC offered him was a step in the right direction. There was comfort in the size of the school and appropriate teacher to student ratios. Tim states that MMC was a rudder for him and he will always be thankful for the push in the back to move forward and the pat on the back that said "yes you can", as well as the friendships forged from the incredible student body. Also Tim doesn't forget about those individuals who had such a positive impact on his life path. Sister Rosewitha was his English teacher, who he remembers as "a precious soul and someone he will always love and respect." According to Tim, his biology professor Dr. Jim Rasmussen, "was just too cool to not appreciate. Sister Arthur, his Physiology professor and another favorite, "was fair but demanding. I always had to be prepared going into her class and I learned more in that class than any other."
Tim was one of those students who was very active, whether it was social experiences at Charlie's Pizza or other "watering holes", trips to the lake, all night study sessions for Sr. Arthur's classes, college sponsored concerts, or ten southern state basketball road trips for the Lancers during the month of January when coach Rudy's wife passed away. These moments in time and others are what Tim likes to refer to as "a collage of moments that helped to formulate and nurture the person I am today. I will say MMC was a big part of preparing me for adulthood."
It's that balance between Tim's college and personal experience that enabled him to graduate from MMC with a degree in Respiratory Therapy and later worked as Director of Respiratory Services for Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD for 23 years. Academically he went on to obtain his MBA, RN, and eventually a doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) from Case Western in Cleveland, OH. Tim accepted the Sr. VP and CNO position at Valley Baptist in Harlingen, TX. Later he relocated to St. Petersburg, FL as VP of Patient Care and CNO for 8 years, and now he is at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, OR as their CNO. Tim states, "I think a little intestinal fortitude, desire to make things better for others, and luck have led me to my current role in life. I have continued on with my education which allowed me to continue to evolve and has provided me with continued opportunities." Tim would like to become a large system CNE and be able to work on health policy that changes the focus and incentives of healthcare from costly acute care to prevention and wellness.
"My greatest accomplishment though, is raising two incredibly talented and beautiful children, who are the love of my life." Christopher is an Emergency Medical physician in Bozeman, MT and Melissa is just about to start her nursing career and is in Clearwater, FL.
"I have always loved the outdoors and I'm in the perfect setting with skiing, whitewater rafting, fly fishing, hiking mountain tops, and am blessed with beauty all around me." Tim adds, "when I look at my life, it has been full of great opportunities to improve healthcare facilities with life saving services, improve the quality of care and engagement of care givers, and improve patient satisfaction and physician relationships." He continues that, " it's funny looking back, I remember thinking four years at MMC seemed like an eternity at age 19. If I only knew then, how quickly that time passes!"

MMC Will Not Increase Tuition Next Academic Year
Students who attend Mount Marty College won't see their tuition bills go up next year. The college's board of trustees has voted to freeze 2014-15 tuition and fees at this years rates.
"The decision to hold tuition constant underscores the commitment that we at Mount Marty College have to keep a private, Catholic college affordable and accessible to our students," MMC president Dr. Joseph Benoit said. "We are pleased to be among the most affordable private colleges in the nation and look forward to continuing our tradition of providing affordable educational excellence in a Christ centered environment."
In October, Mount Marty College and the Yankton Baseball Association began work on seeking approval and funding for the Riverside Baseball Stadium Turf Project. The Lancers baseball team plays all their home games
at the newly renovated stadium, but the need for permanent turf is the last piece of the puzzle. In honor and recognition of his long-term commitment to Mount Marty College and his successful years as the Lancers' Head Baseball Coach, it was decided to name the new field "Bob Tereshinski Field". To learn more about this project and how you can get involved, contact Barb Rezac, Chief Advancement Officer, at (605) 668-1292 or barbara.rezac@mtmc.edu.
MMC Establishes Trap Shooting Club
Mount Marty College has established the first collegiate trap shooting club in South Dakota. According to Athletic Director Chuck Iverson, the school is gathering a 25-member team this month. The co-ed team will practice and
host local competitions at the Jim River Trap Range, with shooting to begin sometime in March. The college said the club will promote gun safety, and that a trap shooting course might be added to the curriculum.
"Our ultimate goal is to get our shooters prepared and qualified for a national competition by this time next year," Iverson said. He added that MMC expects students to show great interest in the club because hunting is one of South Dakota's largest industries. The school is using a grant from the National Shooting Sports Foundation Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative to set up the program. The team's coach will be Rick Kalsow, a trap shooting coach certified by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and a shotgun coach certified by the National Rifle Association.

MMC Student in the News
Mount Marty Student Joins 'Teach for America'
Mount Marty College senior, Julia Schrier, a mathematics education major from Sioux Falls, SD, has recently been selected to participate in Teach for America (TFA). TFA recruits a diverse group of college graduates who demonstrate leadership and achievement to work to expand educational opportunity. TFA provides intensive training, support and career development that helps it's teachers increase their impact and deepen their understanding of what it takes to provide an excellent education for the nations most underserved kids.
Schrier will begin her teaching responsibilities during the TFA Summer Institute in June. She will then teach for two years in a low-income community. She will graduate this spring and begin teaching at Johnson College Prep in Chicago, IL next fall.
According to Dr. Nicholas Shudak, teacher education program director and Shrier's education advisor, "Julia embodies the Catholic and Christian mission to serve the human community that has developed through her educational career in the Sioux Falls Catholic School System and at Mount Marty College."

Jana (Crisler) Donahoe, '80 from Omaha writes that she enjoys receiving the Alumni eNewsletter and after reading the "Alum Spotlight" feature story about Mary McMahon, '76 and her reference to Charlie's Pizza it really brought back memories for her. Her brother Bink and his wife Laurie ('84 and '86) were just talking about Charlie's recently, and how it looked just as it did in the '80's. This , of course, makes him feel young again and recall he and Laurie's dating days - at least that's what his older sister thinks.
Jana was a waitress at Charlie's in the late '70's, and one of the things she remembers is the late Friday night calls from the dorms during Lent. The Mount students would call after 11:00pm and order pizzas with meat to be ready at 12:01am Saturday morning. Whatever the weather, they would make the trek across the field for a "legal" Lenten indulgence. This entertained Ken and Bev Hladky, the owners. They loved the students from the Mount...they were very good to many of them, and that is one of Jana's best college memories. Thanks for the memories Jana!
