Greetings to all Mount Marty Alumni,
Dave Dickes '76

When people think of the month of February, some may think of the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Groundhog Day, or Presidents' Day.  However, what most people tend to think of when they hear "February" is Valentine's Day.  To most, Valentine's Day is a day filled with romance, valentines, flowers, and candy.  Yet, the central theme behind this special day is love.

Love can mean many different things to different people.  That is the beauty of love.  It is all-encompassing.  Love can be found not only in romantic relationships, but also in friendships.  Love can be displayed through our actions, our thoughts, or our words.  Love can come in the form of service, teaching, laughing, or crying.  It can be as simple as a smile, a hug, or a compliment.  Everybody wants to be loved on some level, and you never know when a smile or a "hello" might make someone's day.

Therefore, as we live each day during the month of February, let us remember to show our love in any way we can - in our homes, our jobs, our schools, and our churches.  For as Mother Teresa said, "We can do no great things - only small things with great love."

Please feel free to contact me at anytime.

LTC Kevin J. Bohn, '90

LTC Kevin J. Bohn, a 1990 Mount Marty College graduate, has recently retired from the California Army National Guard.  He proudly served our nation for over 35 years.  Kevin enlisted in 1977 and was a member for 20 years in the 2nd Battalion, 147th Field Artillery, located in Webster, SD.

In December of 1990, he received his Bachelor's degree from MMC in Social Science with an emphasis in History and Criminal Justice as well as a minor in Physical Education.

In early 1991, Desert Storm broke out and Kevin volunteered for service.  Even though he did not get sent to the Middle East, he completed his Advance Course and Cadre Course at Fort Sill, OK.  Upon completion of these courses, Kevin returned to South Dakota to work at the South Dakota Military Academy in Fort Meade.  He was an instructor for the Officer Candidate Course, working in the land navigation area.  After this tour, Kevin enrolled at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD, to get his Core Teaching Certificate, and did his student teaching in Webster, SD.

In January of 1993, after completing his annual training in Camp Ripley, MN with the 2nd Battalion, 147th Field Artillery, Kevin deployed to Panama in support of Task Force Rushmore.  He returned in June to support the Golden Coyote exercises in southwestern South Dakota.  In the fall of 1994, Kevin was hired by the Bristol School District to teach social science to junior and senior high students, and coach cross country and basketball.  In 1997 he moved to Ft. Drum, New York, where his wife, at the time, went back on active duty.  They stayed there until they transfered to Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA in December of 1999.

In 2001, he moved to the California central coast to be Director of Logistics at Camp Roberts, CA and worked there until 2007.  In between that time frame, Kevin was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV, with the 40th Corps Support Group.  Upon his return he became the Director of Logistics at Camp San Luis Obispo, CA, until his military retirement on November 22, 2013.  During his lengthy military career, LTC Bohn received multiple awards, including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the California Meritorious Service Medal.  LTC Bohn is married to Tina Lopez and currently resides in Paso Robles, CA.  Mount Marty College wishes to thank LTC Bohn for his dedication and unselfish service to our country.  We are all proud of you as a Mount Marty alum.

Connie Kostel Spittler Becomes an International Published Author

Connie Kostel Spittler moved from writing and producing film/video to literary projects to become an internationally published author.  Called funny, poignant and thoughtful, her quirky novel, Powerball 33 revolves around ways sudden wealth changes the winner's beautiful, simple life. Connie compressed South Dakota and Nebraska towns into the Powerball 33 location based on growing up in Wagner, SD and traveling the Nebraska countryside.  Check Amazon.books for the list of her current writing.

Two of her illustrated books of nature essays are prizewinners,  The Desert Eternal, selected as a Southwest Book of the Year and The Legend of Brook Hollow, awarded top nature book in Washington DC in 2012.  Both coffee table books are available through Blurb.com.  Her essays, memoir and poetry appear in 20 anthologies and she is so grateful for the creative writing assignments of Sr. Jane at MMC in '52/'53.
