Greetings to all Mount Marty Alumni,
Dave Dickes '76

I hope you had a great holiday season wherever you were, whether it was with family, friends, Jesus, or hopefully, all the above.  As 2013 closes its doors and 2014 rushes in, it's that time of year again when many of us are going to exercise more to lose weight, stop smoking, and/or spend more time with the family, etc.  We come up with resolutions for the upcoming year but often our ideas of what should change are too broad and usually are difficult to keep.  This year, we should focus on taking a closer look into our lives to make decisions about ourselves that can truly have a lasting impact.

So, as I look at myself and my job here at MMC as Director of Alumni Relations, my first New Year's resolution and goal is to introduce some new features and value-added services for you - the Mount Marty Alum.  We are partnering with the PerksCard Network to offer to the Mount Marty College Alumni Association membership the PerksCard program in the coming weeks.  This offer, at no cost to you, is a lifestyle product, service discount and savings program which provides you with exclusive access to discounts on products and services you use every day in the communities where you live and work as well as online.  An overview of the PerksCard program is in the last section of this issue.

Secondly, starting with this issue, another New Year's resolution and goal of mine is to highlight a different MMC alum each month in a feature article about how he or she chose to come to MMC and where the "road" has taken him or her to here and now.  If you know an alum that you believe we should "spotlight", please contact me.

Lastly, my last New Year's resolution and goal is to be more generous by giving more of my time and money to those who need it most.  This resolution was inspired after receiving the following reading below from Proverbs 11 and reflection by Jennifer King, shared with me by a close friend a few days ago.

Have a safe, healthy, and rewarding 2014!

Please feel free to contact me at anytime.

The Gift of Generosity

Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.  The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will ... be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:24-25

Soon after the Christmas cards stop coming, the Christmas bills begin to arrive.  Giving is costly, regardless of the price tag.  Yet God says that in giving of ourselves and in focusing on others, we will be refreshed.

Many aspects of life seem contradictory.  Solomon's statement in Proverbs 11 points to one such paradox that is hard to wrap our minds around.  From the time we were children experimenting with water in the tub, we learned that a certain amount of water put in a cup is the amount that comes back out.  Apparently, God's math is a little different from ours, for he says that as we pour ourselves out for others, we will get back even more.  God says that our resources in him are unlimited - we can give and give and still have more to give.

As we practice generosity with our energy, time, and money, we enjoy God's blessing and refreshment.  Generosity, it seems, is a freeing gift from God.

Give generously; God will fill you back up.

Alum Spotlight
Mary McMahon, RNC, BSN, MS, CHTS-CP

Although Mary McMahon, C'76 lived in a Colorado community that had a reputable nursing program, she decided to attend nursing school at Mount Marty because her great aunt, Kathleen A. Darcy, was an attorney in Yankton.  At an early age, she had wanted to be a lawyer like Auntie Kay, but it was because of her grandfather who always hoped one of his granddaughters would be a nurse, that she decided instead to study nursing.  Even today, Mary clearly remembers her first visit to campus as a pre-teen, with her great aunt and grandparents, who lived in Spalding, NE.  She states that MMC provided a unique experience, as a small Catholic school that was "isolated" yet connected.  Although she lived on-campus all four years, she felt like a member of both the college and local community.  This helped her realize the importance of giving back as a volunteer and staying connected with the college in the Yankton community as well.  Mary has many positive memories of Yankton and MMC, from her work study position at the library to the clinical opportunities at Sacred Heart Hospital.  Of course, on her last visit to Yankton just over two years ago with a fellow alum, who also lives in Colorado, their first stop was Charlie's Pizza...

MMC Takes Aim at Leadership With New Program
Mount Marty College is the first college in the nation to implement an integration of the fierce leadership concepts into not only the general education, but also into the major curriculum of every program at the college.
This curriculum, the Fierce Leadership Program, will aid in the development of the next generation of leaders.  Many programs often target only a select group of students, many of whom already exhibit an aptitude for leadership.  The Mount Marty College program will expose the leadership training to all students.  According to Dr. Suzi Kalsow, Vice-President of Academic Affairs, "we believe that every student, no matter what their field of study and career goals are, can benefit from leadership training that will help them stand out from the crowd".   Integration of the program will start in the fall semester and students will begin to see leadership training infused into their programs.  (Yankton Press & Dakotan)

Tice Earns Doctor of Musical Arts Degree
Mount Marty College's Assistant Professor of Music, Kenneth Tice, recently completed his doctoral study at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio for his doctor of musical arts degree.  For the past year Dr. Tice has been an instructor and the choir director for multiple choirs at MMC.  He is also the founder and director of the Mount Marty Choral Union, and music director for the college musicals with the theatre department.  Dr. Tice joined MMC as a faculty member within the MMC music program in 2012.  Tice completed his doctoral exams and his lecture recital in the spring of 2013.  His DMA document was completed in the summer of 2013.  The degree of Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) was conferred in August and Tice participated in a hooding ceremony on December 13th in Cincinnati, OH.

Webcasts Offer New Way to View MMC Events
The introduction of webcasting through Livestream started with the current basketball season and the streaming broadcasts can be accessed through the college's website at www.mtmc.edu.  While popular for athletics, the webcasts can be used for other campus events, such as concerts and plays, according to MMC athletic director Chuck Iverson.  The webcasts have already been used for winter commencement and President Joseph Benoit's annual "State of the College" address.  "This has been on our radar screen for several years," said Iverson.  "It's a great service to have.  It's great for the fans, especially for the parents and other family and friends who live far away.  It's been a really positive thing.  The webcast reaches high school students considering Mount Marty.  It's been great for recruiting.  You are reaching people from all over," he said.  "When we recruit an athlete, they know that their parents can watch them play, which makes a difference."  The college could expand its webcasting to outdoor sports as well.

MMC Exhibit to Feature Jeff Ballard

Bede Art Gallery will be hosting artist Jeff Ballard and his acrylic paintings entitled, "Defining Purpose," that will be on display January 8-31.

A free reception and gallery talk is scheduled for 2-4p.m. January 31 and is open to the public.

Ballard says of his inspiration for his exhibit, "Working for my family's small asphalt paving and maintenance company has required a lot of time spent repairing broken down equipment.  In my many attempts at accurately assembling parts in front of me, I've learned a lot about the necessary process of trial and error when seeking the correct solution; in this case a fully functioning piece of machinery.  I see this process as a good metaphor for the quest in discovering my life's purpose.  In this body of work, I combine parts diagrams with people from my life in an effort to represent their dealings with questions about the metaphysical realm."

The hours for the Bede Art Gallery are 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and is located in the lobby of the Marian Auditorium.

Donations Honor Former MMC Leaders
Thanks to two donations, Mount Marty College will honor its past as it invests in its future.

The school recently announced it has received two $50,000 gifts intended for naming opportunities in the Avera Science and Nursing Laboratory Complex.  The naming rights will be tributes to former MMC president S. Evangeline Anderson and long-time MMC employee S. Marie Helene Werdel.

The donation in S. Evangeline's  name was made

by Jim and Joyce Donohoe of Dallas and Jerry and Elaine Donohoe of Chicago.  The gift to honor S.Marie Helene was provided by Al and Irene Kurtenbach of Brookings.

S. Evangeline served as the college's president from 1957-1974, helping MMC expand from a two-year institution to a four-year baccalaureate school.

S. Marie Helene began her career at Mount Marty as a faculty member.  Following her teaching career, she became MMC business manager and supervised the buildings on campus, which included overseeing the construction of Corbey Hall and the Roncalli Student Center.  She retired after 37 years at the college.  Barb Rezac, MMC Chief Advancement Officer, said the gifts were a fitting tribute to two deserving women.  "S. Evangeline and S. Marie Helene have such a long history here and have dedicated so much of their lives to Mount Marty," she said.  "It wouldn't be the same place today if it wasn't for them."

The renovation projects will be completed in two phases, Phase 1, the Avera Science Laboratory Complex will include six state-of-the-art science laboratories, including the Otto Ullrich Botanical Laboratory, and is to be completed late summer 2014.  Phase 2, the Avera Nursing Laboratory Complex, will be renovated to include a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory, classrooms and office space for the expanding nursing program.  It will begin once Phase 1 is completed.  Rezac said the latest contributions give MMC a total of $1.7 million raised for the projects.  She also added, "but we still need to raise more, we need all the financial assistance possible" for both projects.
