A Lenten Reflection from Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB '79

Father Thomas
Fr. Thomas, OSB
This is Lent #56 for me. I find myself asking, "Has any Lent, or all of them put together, made any difference in my life? Am I a better Christian, a better person, because of one Lent or all of them put together?" If not, why not?

Ultimately, if we want Lent to make a difference in our lives and become better Christians, and for Lent to have a lasting effect on our lives-we have to take the risk of being honest with ourselves and pull up some stakes. It means we take an honest look at our sinfulness, even to the point of admitting that we DO sin.

For so many of us, we're chronologically adults but Lenten children. So we still give up candy, or desserts...things that really don't get to our sinfulness or lead to conversion and a deeper relationship with God.

We lie, we have sex outside the context of marriage, we ignore helping the poor and unfortunates in society, we use people as objects for our pleasure, we murder people's reputations and gossip about them, we steal people's time and energy for our selfish needs; we waste food, time, energy. And so many other things we do or don't do. And still we give up candy for Lent. HELLO?!

I'm not intending to make us feel guilty...well maybe, just a bit! Rather I want us to be adults about Lent; I want us to be honest with ourselves and what we need to do to improve our relationship with God and each other. God bless your efforts at being honest with yourself, in your relationships and with God. May you humbly do what God asks of you-during these 40 days of Lent and for the rest of your lives!
Save the Date!
Mount Marty College is excited to announce the dates for this summer's all schools reunion. We hope that alumni from all the different schools that have been associated with Mount Marty over the years will once again join us in Yankton for a weekend of family fun, catching up with classmates, baseball, hog roasting, music, dancing, and more!

Rockin' Reunion 2013
Friday, June 28 - Sunday, June 30

This year's theme is "Rockin' Reunion," featuring an alumni baseball game and a dance in the bistro with music from the alumni band "Shattered Silence." By popular demand, we will be bringing back the "Hog on the Hill" event from last year as well. We hope you will be able to join us, and watch your inbox and mailbox for more information in the coming months.
