CCLT Homeowners and Friends,

It is always exciting to change our home in some manner.  This year I got a little bit more money from the IRS and since one of my two bathrooms needed major repairs I took the task on with the help of a contractor.

Since I had not done major repairs to anything in my home for some years now, this felt good.  Now I don't only have the "Martha Stewart's of Kitchens" but also a bathroom with a lot more space and spankling new accessories.

Hope you like this month's newsletter.  In it I also tell you about some programs that might be able to help you or a friend that needs assistance.  Please share!

Until next month, happy reading!

Programs to Assist Homeowners
Sometimes we don't take advantage of a program because we don't know about it.  Here are some programs that might help you out with repairs in your home.

H.O.M.E Program:  This program helps senior homeowners who meet income and home value qualifications to rehab their homes in order meet local housing codes and standards. Homeowners in Kane and DeKalb counties, may be eligible for the program's interest free, deferred loans to rehab their homes. Community Contacts, Inc., a not-for-profit social service agency, will assist with this program by inspecting the property, writing the work order, bidding the job, supervising the contractors, inspecting the job sites and handling the paperwork. For more information, call Community Contacts at: (847) 697-8800.  For more information on this program and others for Seniors please click here.

The Department of Planning and Development offers two programs:

Ongoing:  Small Accessible Repairs for Seniors (SARFS):  Free program deals with the safety, security and accessibility for seniors.  For more information about the program please see flyer click

CCLT
Homeowner
Corner
This month we asked you all to share your tips, advice, and experiences for sprucing up your home!

We heard from two of you - and the winner of the Home Depot gift card was Glenn Wheeler!

________________________________

My name is Glenn Wheeler  and I have owned my condo for six and a half years.  Six months after purchasing my condo I became disabled. Fortunately I had delved right into decorating my place before my disability severely limited what I was able to accomplish.

Nonetheless, I have included a few photos of my main living area.

First I decided on a color scheme, in my case yellow, black and a splash of red. I painted my walls a light yellowish color, I am an artist so I actually did a faux finish. This gives the room a light and airy feel, the finished product is reminiscent of yellow parchment.

Under the breakfast bar,  I unified my color scheme by painting blocks of color in a Mondrian style, (a contemporary early 20th century artist). This was accomplished by interlocking squares and rectangles of my color theme. After it was completed, I mounted lights under the bar, put them on a timer and now in the evening the lights illuminate the wall area and produce a beautiful work of art and interesting lighting accent.

I purchased bar stools at Overstock.com that perfectly match the red in the bar color design.
A friend of mine located three small stained
glasswindows that matched my color scheme,  I painted the frames around the stained glass black, mounted them inside the frame of my transom windows above the sliding glass doors. I simply put eye hooks on the windows themselves and cup hooks on the window frame and voila I hung them. They look beautiful as the east morning sun shines through them, casting a colorful addition to my room.

I received two banners, purchased from the City of Chicago, as a birthday gift. These banners once adorned a light pole advertising a contemporary art show at The Chicago Art Institute. The person who gave them to me, went on line and found them, needless to say, with my being an artist, I was thrilled. They not only boldly state my love of art, but they also fit perfectly in my decorating palate, lending a flair of
drama to the room.

A couple of weeks ago I experimented with doing a self portrait, I haven't done a self portrait for over twenty years. I did my portrait once again utilizing my original palate of yellow, black and red. I placed the painting between the two banners and have received many compliments.

In conclusion, when decorating, do things that you love, let your home be a reflection of you and your life. Don't be afraid to try bold and unusual colors, furnishings and accessories. After all you are a unique individual and your home should be also.

I did not spend a lot of money to do what I have done, I simply put careful consideration and creativity together. You will be amazed and pleased with the end result, that is what decorating is all about. Enjoy!

Another homeowner, Christine Haase, sent us the following:

Well, I found a shower curtain I really liked. I've always loved blue, so I picked a blue color out of the shower curtain fabric

and painted the bathroom that color. It made the whole bathroom look different-- everything popped. I love it!

Q.  What motivates you to continue to work with the CCLT?

A.  I am motivated to continue to work with the CCLT because I believe that all Chicagoans should have access to housing regardless of their incomes.  In addition, the CCLT board has an obligation to ensure that low to moderate income families are not priced out of the Chicago housing market.

Q.  Any recommendation for our CCLT homeowners?

A.  CCLT homeowners should stay connected, informed and take advantage of the tools and resources that the CCLT provides, such as homebuyer counseling, mortgage lending options, legal advice etc.  I strongly believe everyone should have the opportunity to live in and enjoy any of Chicago great neighborhoods regardless of their income.
