Dear CCLT Homeowner,
One of the benefits of being a Chicago Community Land Trust homeowner is that we walk alongside you as you learn all about what it means to be a homeowner.
Because of this, we are very excited to announce that we are working to develop a new curriculum for our homeowners. Tentatively called "CCLT Homeowner University," this two-week course will walk you through everything you need to know about being a homeowner: your mortgage, property taxes, escrow accounts, the restrictive covenant, homeowner's insurance and many other topics.
Our home is the biggest investment most of us will ever make, and we think it's worth spending a few hours learning how it all works, so I hope you will seriously consider attending.
We will follow up with two hands-on workshops in October: the first will be taught - at City Hall - by a Home Depot staff person, and you and your fellow CCLT homeowners will get to choose the topic from a list of possible classes. The second - in October or early November - will teach you how to weatherize your homes, and will provide each of you with a kit to make your home as energy efficient as possible.
All workshops willl include special gifts, and dinner will be served. We hope to see you all there!
Sincerely,
Teresa Lambarry
CCLT Outreach Director

We will be sending out an invitation with final information closer to the date - but for now, please reserve the evenings of September 11th and 18th for the CCLT Homeowner University. Draft agendas for each evening are included below.
What will make these workshops especially useful for you is that we will use your documents to learn about each of the topics. So, for example, when we talk about what an escrow account is, we will use your own mortgage statements as examples. We have also invited experts - including representatives from the Illinois Department of Insurance and the Cook County Assessor's Office - to answer your particular concerns and questions. As an added bonus, we will be giving every household that attends an accordion file to help you organize your records.
If you have other questions about a topic you don't see on the list, let me know- we may be able to add it.

Although this summer has been an unusually cool one, many of us have still had to run our air conditioners. This can lead to rising energy costs. One way to reduce these costs is to install ceiling fans. Ceiling fans are a low-energy way to keep air moving in your home. Because of the air circulation effect, you can get away with keeping your thermostat a degree or two higher in summer and a degree or two lower in winter, netting a rather large savings.
To maximize the ceiling fan's benefit, the air directly below the fan should be blowing down on you in the summer and should be pulled upwards away from you in the winter. You can use the reversal switch on your fan to switch between the modes.
