Fall is here, bringing with it that cool, crisp weather, football, and great events. In fact, we kicked off with football and the NextGen Event on the 9th, chaired by Dipesh Patel. A good crowd gathered at the Pilsener Haus & Biergarten to watch the opening night of Monday Night Football while enjoying some beer and networking. (By the way, Philadelphia beat Washington, 33-27.)

On the 11th, Peter Provenzale hosted a breakfast in Bridgewater. The breakfast meetings continue to be popular as they offer great one-on-one networking in smaller groups. If you have not had the opportunity to attend one of the breakfast events held around the state, I encourage you to do so.

On the 19th, Jane Mitnick chaired our reception to honor the appointment of The Honorable Christine Gravelle to the United States Bankruptcy Court District of New Jersey. The Judge was a gracious honoree and it was a privilege to host this event for her. More than 90 people gathered at the Tournament Players Club at Jasna Polana in Princeton, the site of the former palatial home of one of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical heirs. There were many judges in attendance, as well as many non-members. A great event overall, special guests included:

  • Honorable Gloria M. Burns, Chief Judge
  • Honorable Rosemary Gambardella
  • Honorable Judith H. Wizmur
  • Honorable Novalyn L. Winfield
  • Honorable Kathryn C. Ferguson
  • Honorable Donald H. Steckroth
  • Honorable Morris Stern
  • Honorable Michael B. Kaplan
  • Honorable Christine M. Gravelle

The last event of the month, the Red Bank breakfast scheduled for the 30th, was postponed. Stay tuned for details!

Member Profile:  Honorable Rosemary Gambardella

Judge Gambardella

The first woman to serve on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of New Jersey, Judge Gambardella was sworn in on May 3, 1985. She served as Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey from 1998 to 2005,overseeing bankruptcy cases in the Newark vicinage.

She began participating in NJTMA events before becoming a member in 2004. She has served on the board for many years, has been involved in educational conferences as an expert panelist, and recently has become more involved in the NextGen committee.

"It's important to mentor young professionals, and I hope to attend many more of their functions. As a judge I definitely want to be part of that mentoring process that I know many TMA members do. It's a way of giving back, and it's also important because of the educational component of TMA," she says.

In addition to the beneficial social aspects of the organization, she says being part of TMA has helped her keep in touch with the industry and gives her valuable third-party perspectives.

"As part of the bankruptcy system I believe the bench has a role in outreach to all professionals. I believe getting involved in organizations like TMA with lawyers, accountants and turnaround professionals makes the system better. We get to know what's on people's minds and how we can best serve the public as part of the overall bankruptcy system. Our court has always had a strong tradition of outreach to meet professionals and the people that populate our courts," she explains.

A native of Newark, Judge Gambardella says "if Bruce Springsteen is anywhere in or near New Jersey, I'm there!" In addition to Bruce concerts, she enjoys the theater, opera, and ballet. She travels whenever possible and loves spending time with friends and family.

Member Profile: Richard S. Hauer, Managing Director,
Executive Sounding Board Associates, Inc.

As a Managing Director, Richard has established a reputation for strong management, leadership, marketing and interpersonal skills.  He puts his deep experience to work in restructuring and litigation support matters, and has testified and provided valuation expertise in a number of high profile Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

He first joined TMA in 2002 when he owned his own firm, Gemini Realty Advisors. A client had introduced him to the national TMA, then he joined the New York Chapter, where his office was located.

"Then I met the New Jersey group and Steve Ravin convinced me to come to NJ," he recalls.

Over the years he has been involved in many committees, notably events and membership. He is currently on the planning committee for our Super Bowl Event.

"Being a member has enriched me as a person because I met a lot of quality people whose company I enjoy, and who I have learned from."

At the career level, Richard says being a NJTMA member has helped him grow his network. "Being part of an organization you see people on a more regular basis than you normally would, and you become friendly. And, it's human nature, people like to do business with people they like, so it has resulted in more opportunities than if I weren't part of an organization."

In his rare free time, Richard enjoys spending time in fun activities with his daughters, ages 15 and 17. "And, as much tennis, biking and being outdoors as I can," he laughs.
