Student Spotlight

Sasha Williams '19
Fourteen-year-old coder Sasha Williams was just the youngest role model showcased on Career Girls, an online platform that showcases video clips of women role models sharing advice to inspire young girls to expand their horizons, improve their academic performance, and dream big about their futures.

Sasha shares how she began her love of coding and technology by joining the nonprofit organization Black Girls Code, which teaches girls about creating technology. She recently competed against teams in an international hack-a-thon competition, where her Oakland-based Black Girls Code team developed a girls' safety app "Ohana" utilizing wearable stickers. She was offered her own segment of YouTube videos and a blog about her role and future in technology on the Career Girls website. Sasha encourages other young girls to pursue coding and careers in technology so one day they can make a difference in this important STEM field.

App Challenge Seeks Entries by Jan. 15
congressional app challenge
If your tech-savvy daughter likes her smart phone - and we're sure she does - she may be interested in building an app to submit for the Congressional App Challenge.

Established by the U.S. House of Representatives, this competition is a nationwide event intended to engage students' creativity and encourage their participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. This competition allows students to compete with peers in their own congressional district by creating and exhibiting their software application, or "app." By encouraging our nation's young programming talent, Congress hopes to shine a light on the growing importance of these skills.

Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four. They must submit their app's source code online by midnight on Jan. 15, 2016 EST and provide a video demo explaining their app and what they learned through this competition process.

Find more details here.
