Student Spotlight
Micaela Camozzi '16
Last month Micaela competed at the 5th World Kuo Shu (Kung Fu) Championship Tournament in Mendoza, Argentina. The World Tournament takes place every three years and is the Olympic equivalent in Chinese Martial Arts. (The last World Tournament was in Malaysia, which she competed in freshman year.)

"Out of ten events, I placed first in seven, second in two, and third in one. These events included grappling, sparring, and weapon and open hand forms. The next World Tournament's location is yet to be determined, but I am determined to earn a spot on the U.S. Lei Tai (full contact) fighting team and become a World Champion Fighter like my teacher, Ms. Morgan Newman," said Michaela, a first-degree adult brown belt. (Pictured, right, with her teacher.)

Since Freshman year, Micaela has been an instructor at East West Kung Fu, teaching classes and private lessons.  "I love sharing my passion for martial arts with my students and have spread that passion to Carondelet's Martial Arts Club, which I founded last year."

Congratulations Micaela!

Vivian Vo '16
Vivian was selected to serve on Google's Advisory board committee for 2015. Under the guidance of Girl Scouts, she meets regularly with mentors and executives from Google and other high-tech companies to help close the gender gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) related fields. Vivian is currently inspiring girls to code through Google's "Made with Code" initiative.

During the 2014-15 school year she held seven workshops and introduced over 200 youth to computer coding. During the summer, she introduced coding to the daughters of employees at Salesforce Corporation in San Francisco. She explained what coding is, its relevancy in our day-to-day lives, introduced some fun computer exercises and taught them how to code. Vivian and her team of board members were able to collectively reach over 15,000 girls this year.

Thank you, Vivian, for narrowing the gender gap in the technology industry by encouraging girls to pursue STEM.
Mrs. Allocco Highlighted as St. Mary's 'Teacher for Tomorrow'

Math and science teacher Mrs. Janice Allocco gained extensive experience in St. Mary's "Teachers for Tomorrow" program, which enables students to earn a bachelor's and a master's degree in five years as well as a multiple-subject teaching credential.

Mrs. Allocco, who graduated from the program with an M.A. in 2006, was recently highlighted in the university's magazine in an article called "Ready for Anything."

She credits her success to the program's real-world learning model, which allowed her to begin working in the classroom as a college freshman and, over time, helped prepare her for anything she would see as a teacher.

Ven a Ver Trip Makes Local News Headlines

Carondelet students were recently featured in the news for their "Ven a Ver" trip to Salinas and work at Dorothy's Place. Catherine Berdiago '16 said, "It (Ven a Ver) makes me want to make a difference in the world.  Not just in my area, but hopefully making a greater change throughout ... and influencing others to make that same change."

Ven a Ver is a four-day, three-night immersion trip available to juniors and seniors. It provides students with an opportunity to walk alongside of the poor, homeless and migrant communities in Salinas. Students cook and serve meals at Dorothy's Place, tutor children, work with migrant farm workers in the fields, and then reflect on these experiences through the lens of faith and justice.
