Last Friday, in our first all-school mass of the year, we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. In her reflection on the mass readings, Mrs. Dittrich shed light on Mary's "yes" to God, and challenged students to consider how they might say "yes" to God in big and small ways.

A Blessing On Our New Year Together  (by Joyce Rupp)

Sacred Mystery, waiting on the threshold of this new school year, you open the gates and beckon to us.

"Come! Come!" Be not afraid of what awaits you as you enter the unknown.  Be not doubtful of your ability to grow from your joys and sorrows.  I am with you.  I will be your Guide.  I will be your Protector. You will never be alone.

Guardian of this year, we set aside our worries and concerns.  We open our lives to mystery, to beauty, to questions, to the endless opportunity of discovering You in our relationships, and in all the silent wisps of wonder that will draw us to your heart.  We welcome the light of your wisdom, peace and love as we walk with hope into this new school year.

St. Joseph Pray for Us
God is My Light

Carondelet faculty and staff are looking forward to seeing you at Back to School Night - Thursday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m.  The evening begins in the Garaventa Center. (Remember that traffic/parking can be difficult on this night, so please plan accordingly.)

No matter what our age, being back in high school can be a little stressful, so in order to avoid any of those can't-find-your-class or late-for-class nightmares, please print the following campus map and evening/course schedule.  You will also need to ask your daughter to complete the course schedule.

Student directories will be distributed during 4 period at Back to School Night.  (Only families who agreed to have their address published will receive a directory.)

Tip!  If you need to visit a class at DLS, wear comfortable shoes as you only have 7 minutes between classes and will have to walk quickly.

challenge
This year, Carondelet is excited to be partnering with Challenge Success, a program created by Madeline Levine, Ph.D., Jim Lobdell, M.A., and Denise Pope, Ph.D. as an expansion of the highly successful SOS (Stressed-Out Students) Project at Stanford University.  Challenge Success will provide practical, research-based solutions to increase student engagement while reducing the undue stress and pressure so many of our students are feeling.
We would like to thank those who have volunteered to be part of our Challenge Success Core Team which is comprised of students, parents, teachers and administrators.  Together, we will work on the Challenge Success project aimed at transforming policies and practices to address the need for academic engagement and well-being for our students/your daughter(s).

Our school caf, run by Epicurean Group, provides fresh, natural and organic food prepared from scratch every day.  All meat, poultry and eggs are sourced from local farms and seafood is purchased according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch guidelines.  Even sauces, dressings and stocks are made in-house -- nothing comes from cans.  Epicurean Group loves what they do and they believe it is their calling to serve and provide healthy, fresh, delicious food that will nourish the body and minds of your daughter.

We are excited to use www.MySchoolBucks.com and don't forget to download the mobile app on your phone for easy account management on the go. Please see the attached Getting Started Guide on how to setup your new accounts and the benefits of MySchoolBucks.

booksPurchasing Books and Licenses

The online bookstore (ESCO) is open for students to purchase their books and resources.  You will find much of our curriculum material is digital, and you may notice some required license fees.  These are for digital materials your daughter receives in class, but they must be purchased through our online book vendor, ESCO.  This holds true for both CHS and DLS  classes.  Many publishers will sell digital content licenses only to institutions, and thus the licenses must be purchased in this manner for CHS to distribute.

If you have any questions regarding book purchases, please contact Joan Tracy [email protected].

CervisClass of 2018 & New Families Only - Signing up with Cervis

Thanks to the many of you who have already sent us your volunteer clearance documents (requirements listed here).  Now, if you haven't done so already, please be sure to set up your Cervis account by following this link.  Each parent/guardian should have his/her own account (if you use the same phone number as the "primary phone" number, the accounts will be linked and you can access each other's account while logged into your own account.)

If you had a daughter at Carondelet last year, it is important that you don't set up a new account.  If you're having trouble accessing your account, feel free to contact our Volunteer Coordinator Angela Ricci.

For any questions, contact our part-time (Tuesday - Thursday) Volunteer Coordinator Angela Ricci at (925) 686-5353 x177 or [email protected] and she will be happy to help you.

*Check the weekly newsletter and the Volunteer Opportunity page for upcoming events/opportunities for volunteering.  By the end of this week we will have a sign-up available for helping with Back to School Night.

counselors From the Personal Counselors

We (the personal counselors) are available throughout the school day to provide support for our students and their families. In order for us to be of assistance, we highly encourage you to contact one of us in the event of a family crisis, such as a death, illness, separation, or divorce. We can also provide referrals to outside support services, when needed. Counseling services are confidential.

In addition to individual sessions we currently conduct ongoing support groups for the following:

* Students whose parents are separated or divorced
* Students who have lost a family member through death
* Students dealing with depression or anxiety
* Students with a chronic illness
* Students who come to Carondelet without peer support ("Onlies")

As the need arises we will offer additional support groups for other issues. Please feel free to call either of us with any questions or concerns. We also have a page on the Carondelet website which includes links to relevant teen topics.

appology An Apology from Lands' End

Dear Valued School Uniform Partner,

I am following up on an email Edgar Huber, president and CEO of Lands' End, sent earlier this week expressing our regret that a GQ magazine with a suggestive cover was sent to some of our school uniform customers as part of a recent customer bonus offer.

Our first priority is our customers. We have listened to your concerns and, as noted in our first letter, we are making every effort to halt distribution of all additional issues of GQ magazine. However, we have been informed that all of the August issues and 20% of the September issues have entered into the mail stream. As a result, customers that qualified for the initial bonus (anyone who spent more than $100 from July 9 to 16) will be receiving the August issue of GQ in the next few days and some may receive the September issue in the coming weeks. We wanted to alert you of this and reassure you that all future mailings that we could impact have been halted.

On Monday, August 11, we switched all GQ subscriptions to Conde Nast Traveler. Based on customer feedback, we have now removed all affected Lands' End School Uniform customers from that subscription as well. Lands' End School Uniform customers will not be automatically enrolled in any promotional magazine offers of this nature in the future.

If parents would like to re-subscribe to a year-long subscription to GQ or Cond Nast Traveler, they can call 1-800-685-0089 or send an email to [email protected].

Again, we are extremely sorry that your school's parents received this particular magazine on our behalf. There are simply no excuses; this was a mistake.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out directly to me at 608-935-6621 or [email protected] or to Kelly Ritchie, SVP of employee and customer services, at 608-935-4477 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Joe Ferreri

Enjoy!

clearAre You an "All Cleared" Volunteer?

1.  Have you completed a livescan (fingerprinting) test for CHS?
2.  Do you have a current TB test on file with CHS?
3.  Have you  completed the "Shield the Vulnerable" 90 minute on-line course and provided Carondelet with the certificate?

If you answered "YES" to these questions, you would be considered an "all cleared" volunteer.

All parents who will be volunteering at any event where students are present are required to become an "all cleared" volunteer.  You will find a list of the requirements here or on the Parent Volunteer page of the CHS website. These requirements must be fulfilled prior to the beginning of school.

Please contact Angela Ricci with any questions at (925) 686-5353 x177 or by email: [email protected].

Thank you for taking the time to complete this important process - we appreciate all you do and your volunteer time!

Please remember that the safety of your daughters is our priority which is why it's important that all our volunteers meet these requirements.
