Honor Roll

Novena for Saint Joseph

http://www.catholictradition.org/Joseph/joseph14.htm

In the Catholic Church, a novena is a devotion consisting of prayers said on nine successive days, asking to obtain a special petition.

In Sicily in the 17th century, the custom had sprung up among religious communities  preparing for the feast of their founder with a novena of Masses.

So as we prepare to celebrate St. Joseph, our patron saint, on March 19, we will pray together on nine school days, a prayer novena in honor of St. Joseph.  We are invited to reflect on a special intention for ourselves, our family or anyone in need and entrust that to St. Joseph during our novena.  Each day one of our students will lead our Novena Prayer (which you can also find on the front of our website).

Prayer:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Saint Joseph,
with a father's care
you raised the Child Jesus,
and with a husband's love
you shared your life with Mary, his mother.

We now entrust ourselves to your care
and place in your hands
this special request...

(Remember now your special intention in the silence of your heart...)

lent"Raised from the Ground Up"

Our theme this Lent is "Raised From the Ground Up" and throughout Lent we are all invited to consider ways in which God desires to raise us up.

For our social outreach project, we are teaming up with Free Wheelchair Mission, who work to provide people in 90 developing countries with free wheelchairs that are greatly needed. Poverty and disability go hand in hand in many places throughout the world, which, unfortunately, leads to our sisters and brothers living their lives in dark rooms and on the ground.

Through our participation in the Free Wheelchair Mission Project, we will provide mobility for those who are forgotten, abused and alone - we will literally see people raised up from the ground.  At the same time, each and every one of us is in need of being lifted up by God.

In addition to raising money throughout Lent to provide wheelchairs, students will be invited to attend educational lunchtime activities and consider spending a day in a wheelchair.

Please stay tuned for announcements for ways to get involved and make a difference.

We have been receiving a lot of questions regarding PIP hours and Cervis lately so we've put together a list of FAQs to answer your most commonly asked questions.

Q.  How many PIP hours do I need to complete?

A.  20 per family (10 for a single-parent household)

Q.  When are my hours due?

A.  April 30, 2014

Q.  Where do I access Cervis?

A.  You can access Cervis from the "Parent Volunteer Opportunities" quick link on the Parents page of the CHS website.

Q.  Where do I sign up for events and how do I know when an event is available?

A.  All events are listed on the "Parent Volunteer Opportunities" page of the website and in Cervis.  You can usually also find the event listed in the weekly e-newsletter, but if you want to sign up for the most popular volunteer opportunities, the best idea is to check the Parent Volunteer Opportunities page before the newsletter goes out.

Q.  How many hours do I have?

A.  Log into Cervis and from the Volunteer Main Menu click on "View / Print Volunteer Service Activity History" to see your hours.  (You will only see your hours.  To see your spouse's hours, you need to log in to his/her account.  Add the two totals together for a grand total.)

Q.  Why aren't my _________ hours showing?

A.  In transitioning to the new system, it is possible that we missed hours you completed at the end of last school year or for some of the fall athletics.  If this is the case, please follow these instructions and record your hours.

Q.  What is a "Service Project"?

A.  Service Projects are volunteer opportunities that are not Events.  You can sign up to volunteer for events such as the Crab Feed, Visions of Christmas, Desserts for St. Joseph's Day, etc. Once you sign up, and have completed your hours on that day, you will receive credit.  For Service Projects, you are helping with volunteer opportunities that do not have an event sign up. This may include: stuffing envelopes, chaperoning a field trip, sewing pillowcases for St. Marty's Party, working as a team parent in Athletics, etc.  Once you have completed your service project, you log in to Cervis and log your own hours (instructions found here).

Q.  Who will log my Athletics PIP hours?

A.  You log your own hours by following the instructions here

Q.  What are the Parent Volunteer Requirements?

A.  All of the volunteer requirements can be found on this page

Q.  How do I know if I'm a Cleared Volunteer?

A.  First, look over the requirements (found here). If you are not sure if you're cleared, chances are you're not.  In this case, you can send an email to our part-time Volunteer Coordinator Angela Ricci at [email protected] to find out what you're missing.  (Angela only works Mondays and Thursdays so please be patient if it takes her a few days to get back to you.)

Q.  I am a team parent and would like to drive students to practice. What do I need to do?

A.  All drivers must be cleared volunteers and have a current CDL and insurance on file.

actClass of 2015 - ACT/SAT Exams and Method Test Prep

We advise all juniors to take the ACT with Writing Assessment in April or June and the SAT Reasoning Test in May or June. Juniors considering colleges which require SAT Subject Tests should register for the June test date. Please be advised that although SAT Subject Tests are no longer required for the University of California, students may submit Subject Test results to demonstrate proficiency in specific areas. Other selective colleges may recommend or require Subject Tests.

Preparing for the exams is a critical component of the process. We suggest students use Method Test Prep (MTP) to prepare for the ACT and SAT. Students can access MTP through the student Quick Links on CHS website or through the links on students' Naviance home page. The first time students log on, they will need to sign up. Carondelet has paid the fee for all CHS students to have access to MTP which offers an initial assessment, lesson plans, practice questions, and full length practice exams. Online registration for ACT is available at www.act.org and at www.collegeboard.com for SAT.  If students need help registering for tests, accessing Method Test Prep, or have questions about which tests to take or when, please come to the College & Career Center.

WASHINGTON, DC - Are you a high school artist? Do you want a chance at having your artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol and visiting D.C. this June? U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez) is now accepting entries for the 2013 Congressional Arts Competition for California's 11th Congressional District.  Deadline for submissions is the week of April 14, 2014.

High school student artists in the 11th District are invited to submit an original painting, drawing or other art form for the competition. One student's work will be selected by a judging panel of local artists to hang in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year along with student artwork from across the country. The winning student will also be flown to D.C. in June for the Annual Congressional Art Competition Reception.

See Ms. Miller in room 45 for more information and help with the process.

crabThank You for Supporting our 2014 Crab Feed!

We had another rousing success with 500 guests attending the 2014 Crab Feed. With the core team of Jean Sherlock, Jerry Carpenello, Tony & Michele Eichers, Lynn & Robert Velazquez, Jay Knudson, Kriste Buckley, and Rick & Janice Tonti, the Mardi Gras themed evening was filled with tasty food, yummy desserts and culminated with a performance from "Dead Weight" whose drummer is our own CHS parent Scott Buckley.

The event could not have succeeded without all the volunteers that lent a hand Saturday, as well as Sunday.  We look forward to 2015.

Also 5 core positions will be available in 2015/2016, if parents are interested in a core position that fulfills the entire PIP commitment, please contact Robert Velazquez at [email protected] about filling one of these positions.
