ashAsh Wednesday marks the Beginning of Lent

This last Wednesday, students, faculty and staff gathered in prayer to receive ashes and commemorate Ash Wednesday. In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. It is a season of penance, reflection and fasting. While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all Roman Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season.

This Lenten season, we also ask that you join us in our Lenten project "Trashing Malaria" where we will pick up trash in our community to raise money for mosquito nets. Stay tuned for more information about this project.

Check out this 2 minute video for a quick refresher on Ash Wednesday and Lent.

risingOne Billion Rising at Carondelet
This last week during lunch time our young women were invited to learn about and participate in an international movement, ONE BILLION RISING. This was an awareness building experience for women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to violence against women. Why? Because one in three women on this planet is raped or beaten in her lifetime, according to the United Nations. That is ONE BILLION WOMEN violated. One billion daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, lovers and friends.

ONE BILLION RISING moved the earth, activating women and men to dance across every country and promote the dignity of all human beings especially women.

After an Easter trip to Nicaragua last year, Emma Walsh '16 and her brothers were inspired to make a difference in the lives of children both at home and abroad and formed a charity called "Holding Hearts".  Through this charity, Emma has not only collected school supplies for a school in Nicaragua, but also recently threw a Valentine's Day party for nearly 100 children at the Monument Crisis Center!  The afternoon included face painting, frosting big heart-shaped cookies and lots of fun.

Thank you to Emma who is serving her community and putting the gospel values to work!
