greetingAs we continue our Advent journey let us be inspired by a story from Dr. Marcy Fox's reflection at Christ the King Church, December 2, 2012:

"Many years ago I was teaching at a Catholic elementary school in South Central Los Angeles. The neighborhood was the home to the now famous gang called the crips....  One day in Advent I was teaching my fifth graders about the Christmas story. I had pictures of the manger scene and identified all the characters, the shepherds, the wise men and of course Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus. To conclude my lesson I asked the question.  Why do you think God sent us Jesus? I was expecting something like a catechism answer...  But no. Anthony, a boy that rarely raised his hand, was waving his hand excitedly. I called on him and he said. 'I know why God sent us Jesus. I know!  God sent us Jesus because God knows that no one would ever be afraid of a baby.'   Theologians, priests and teachers step aside for the wisdom of this child."

Let's spend a few minutes each Advent day recalling why God sent Jesus to us...

SimoneSr. Simone Campbell Visits Carondelet

Yesterday, Carondelet welcomed Sister Simone Campbell to speak with our students and faculty about how Catholic Social Teachings apply to the economy.  Sister continued the conversation of the economic issues that were raised at the Clare Dunn Forum in October, especially around the disparity in the distribution of wealth.  Sister's reflections based on the encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, CARITAS IN VERITATE,  sparked controversy and challenged all of us to find ways to live out the mission of Jesus in our times, to work for justice with charity...

Sr. Simone is a Sister of Social Service, a leader, a facilitator, a lawyer and a poet. Currently she is the Executive Director of NETWORK, a national Catholic social justice lobby in Washington, D.C.  Over the past few months Sister Simone led the "Nuns on the Bus" nine state tour to lift up the needs of people who live in poverty.

speakerControversial Issues

Several emails today concerning our assembly with Sr. Simone Campbell yesterday have prompted me to write.  Over the past years we have brought many guest speakers and programs into school life.  Sometimes the issues can be seen as "controversial" .... Global warming, Immigration, Animal Rights, the Economy, speakers of other faiths.  All have been met with some measure of support AND some measure of concern.  It is simply fact that we all see from our own perspective. While we realize that we "can't please all of the people all of the time"  know that we strive to make sure our guests live out the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church AND the Mission of Carondelet.

This year we are focusing explicitly on the Catholic Social Principles.  As a school we work in partnership with parents/guardians so we always hope that the ideas expressed by the speaker or outside program reaches home and that the dialogue continues around dinner, a fire or in the car ride!  In these conversations, sometimes very messy conversations, much learning can take place.

As always we welcome your comments and questions.  If you are interested in recommending a speaker or program that you think will benefit students at CHS, please give me a call.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Libby
