Thinking Aloud....
"The conscious mind allows itself to be trained like a parrot, but the unconscious does not - which is why St. Augustine thanked God for not making him responsible for his dreams"

The First Step in Evolving Consciousness

Projection is an unconscious process, much like digesting food or having a wound heal; it is not something we do on purpose. This process of projection causes us to perceive aspects and energies of our own being as though they existed exclusively outside ourselves and were the exclusive "property" and responsibility of others.
It is through projection that we usually gain the first conscious, relatively clear (though mistakenly attributed) glimpses of currently unconscious aspects of our own being that are pressing and clamoring for more conscious acknowledgment, recognition, and expression in our waking lives. I recently told my wife about a nightmare figure menacing me in a dream and she said that in her imagined version of the dream the monster is kind of funny, and feels like a Trickster. This is an invitation to evolving consciousness for both of us.
When we pay attention to our projections unconscious contents begin to seep and bubble up from our individual and collective unconscious depths. We become vaguely aware of them at the periphery of our conscious awareness, and through the hairline cracks in our experience of the waking world. In this completely natural and endlessly repeating drama of evolving conscious awareness we unconsciously project these newly energized elements outward onto the world and onto particular people and situations that echo the symbolic content of the pre-conscious material that is rising and thrusting itself into our field of perception.
This is the first step in the unfolding drama of evolving consciousness. The more our conscious self-awareness develops the more necessary it is for us to recognize consciously, acknowledge, and withdraw these previously unconscious projections of our own inner lives from the people and situations in the external world where we first "saw" them.
