Who Is Jeremy?

Dr. Jeremy Taylor, a Unitarian Universalist minister, has worked with dreams for  decades.  He blends the values of spirituality with an active social conscience and a Jungian perspective.  He is convinced all dreams come for our health and wholeness, and have multiple layers of meaning. Co-founder and past president of the International Association for the Study of  Dreams, he has written four books on dreams and their relationship to our search for individuation and community.  He pioneered dream work on the internet  with a dream show on AOL in the 1990's.  Jeremy teaches classes and leads workshops all over the world.

In the Light of the Rising Sun

The Sun of Consciousness

Consider for a moment what that first instant of awakening from a dream feels like - that universal split-second of transition when we are totally amazed and confused - what was that all about? That archetypal moment is really a moment of embarrassing and humbling clarity, (whether we recognize it or not). It is a moment of raw, unprocessed understanding - we see and feel directly, (if only for an instant), just how much our deeper lives and unconscious motivations really are just as strange, confusing, and unknown to us as the dream itself appears to be - it may well be the most spontaneously open and honest moment of self-awareness and self-recognition any of us has all day.

This is true, all over the globe. All people dream, and awaken surprised and confused - and the metaphoric language of dream symbolism is the same for us all, no matter where we live, or what language we speak. When Egara no Heita kills Uwabami, the great python, or when Susanowo overcomes the eight-headed dragon, the Yamata no Orochi, each is acting out essentially the same archetypal/symbolic drama as Siegfried killing the dragon Fafner, or Indra killing the great rain-serpent Vritra.

In each "version" of this archetypal "dragon slaying" story, the defeat of the great serpent saves the world and allows human and all other life to continue, expand, and flourish.

At the same time, each one of us must confront and overcome this same archetypal "serpent" in our psyche, the repeating archetypal pattern that would allow our lives to be ruled by fear, and would keep us from the "dragon's treasure" of primal energy and creativity if we did not confront and overcome it.

Very often, that interior struggle appears in the symbolism of the dreams of individual dreamers as an actual traditional "dragon slaying" struggle, and sometimes it takes other forms, (like a battle with a giant machine, or some other more "modern" symbolic example of the same ancient pattern) - but the drama is essentially the same: will the dreamer's heroic consciousness succeed in overcoming the seemingly vast and unconquerable power of the huge, non-human adversary? And the stakes are also always the same - nothing less than the healthy survival and creative development of the person's individual life, and also of the collective life of the community as a whole, fed and supported by the life of the individuals who compose it.

Every day, the same sun rises out of the waves to illuminate and warm us all. This great light of the sun is not only the fiery ball of hydrogen fusing into helium that scientists tell us about, it is also the greatest archetypal symbol of the consciousness and increasing self-awareness that fuels our lives and makes us human.

Each person dreams his and her own unique versions of this archetypal "sun of consciousness" rising from the "great darkness" of unconsciousness that apparently gives birth to it each morning when each one of us awakens and faces the day.

Many Angles on Dreams Seminars
All About Shadow -
Particularly Bright Shadow

This is the first of two new seminars in Jeremy's Albany, CA "Many Angles" on Dreams Seminars. (The next one is Nov 2-3: Dream Recall, the Evolution of Consciousness and Spiritual Awareness, and Building a Bridge Between the Worlds).  Both these seminars qualify for the Marin Institute for Projective Dream Work (MIPD) requirements, although you do not need to be in the MIPD program to attend.

The group is limited to about 14 members to allow maximum participation and discussion.  Focus will be on lecture, questions, and discussion, with occasional dream work.  Advance registration is required.  Prerequisite: previous attendance at one of Jeremy's seminars or workshops, or permission of the convener.

About this Seminar:
Unconscious projection is at the very heart of dream work (and every other human activity, awake and asleep, for that matter!). A greater conscious appreciation of the ubiquity and inevitability of projection is absolutely necessary for good dream work, as well as for any real progress on the archetypal path that Carl Jung called "individuation," (to say nothing of our organized efforts to avoid the collective disasters toward which our blundering unconscious projections are propelling us).

The encounter with personal and collective archetypal images of what Jung called the "Shadow," (both dark and bright) is at the paradoxical center of all our efforts to grow evolve, and individuate. The Shadow symbolically represents what we think of as the "worst parts of ourselves," while the Bright Shadow is our unconscious projection of positive traits and energies outward onto others.

We will gather and explore the nature of projection itself, with particular emphasis on the Bright Shadow.

Miriam's Well Retreat Center

Dreams and Recovery

All dreams come in the service of health and wholeness; even the worst recurring nightmares come to help the dreamer. The same principle applies to the dreams of those in recovery.  Even when these dreams appear to repeat actual experiences in waking life they always have important levels of symbolic meaning.

Take the classic dream of suddenly being back in the grips of addiction - in my experience this kind of dream comes precisely because the recovery is so solid and integrated into waking life that he/she is in danger of forgetting just how bad it actually was.

All dreams remembered will contain invaluable symbolic information about the unconscious root influences that have manifested in addiction, together with symbolic hints about how best to deal effectively with those unconscious patterns.  Every remembered dream is an indicator that there is a creative health and wholeness promoting role for the dreamer's waking mind to play.

The workshop is for everyone.  We're all addicted to something, whether it disrupts our lives or not. Any dreamer can find hints and pathways to greater health and wholeness, both individual and collective, at this workshop

This workshop is presented by Miriam's Well Retreat Center whose mission is to offer transformational experiences that initiate and sustain conscious spiritual evolution toward

peaceful coexistence.
