In the late 1990s, the emphasis was on very low yields and later harvesting, than is the case today, while new oak levels were also higher."

The tannins are now starting to melt away, allowing the fruit to be fully expressive. Violets, lavender and blue/purplish fruit grace the finish. There is a lot to like here."

Greetings!

After the cool, wet spring, came the humid, wet summer, which was followed by the surprisingly nice autumn. The weeks of sun and warmth from mid-September on arrived just in time to save the Barbera and Nebbiolo harvests. After the unceasing difficulties of the growing season, the late-season sun came as blessed relief, and with it the vintage was saved.

While the 2014 wines will never be classic, structured and long-lived like 2010, nor as complex and forward as 2007, we have made wines this year of which we are unquestionably proud. Nebbiolo is well-known for its ability to shake off cold and wet if the critical end-of-season period has sun and this year is a case in point. It was also a vintage in which the best, historic sites showed why they are the best, historic sites ... and we feel fortunate that we farm some of these great vineyards.

For the last weeks, the rain and fog has shrouded Barolo. After the end of the Truffle festival in Alba, the traffic from tourists and visitors has calmed somewhat, and everyone is looking forward to relaxing a bit over the holidays.

2014 Harvest and Winemaking
 
The 2014 summer was cool and damp and many growers were worried that the inclement weather would continue into the critical autumn ripening period leaving many with green, underripe fruit.  Fortunately the sun came out at the end of the second week of September and the ensuing warmth and sun allowed the Nebbiolo to reach an excellent maturity. Of course, those who had not done the necessary work during the growing season had great damages from peronospera and oidium, as well as the ravages of the hail that struck parts of the zone 3 times.

We were fortunate that Vignane and Villero were only slightly damaged in the hail, and that Baudana and Cannubi Boschis were mostly spared and we were able to produce near-normal quantities of grapes that showed all the maturity of Luca's trademark meticulous vineyard care. We used every break in the weather to treat against diseases or do the daily work of training the new shoots to allow for maximum air circulation (critical in a wet growing season). The first hint of diseases would bring the full weight of Luca's attention to bear and thankfully, by dint of amazing effort, he was able to grow beautifully ripe fruit. 

The great historic crus of Cannubi Boschis, Villero and Baudana showed why Nebbiolo from these sites has always been highly prized: these sites produced fruit with better ripeness, finer tannins and better balance than fruit grown by the same methods in other sites. In a difficult year like 2014, the site and terroir makes the difference. Furthermore, the Serralunga area received significantly less rain and hail than the Barolo/Castiglione Falletto/La Morra and Novello areas, making the farming at Baudana much, much easier.

In the cellars, Luciano worked his usual magic: a fresh pied-de cuv�e for each vineyard plot to allow each vineyard's native yeasts to emerge; the anaerobic maceration before fermentation begins to extract the most delicate aromas; the careful use of pump-overs and d�l�stage for the best possible flavor and color extraction; and racking off the skins at the correct moment to avoid green tannins. While some of the vineyard sites showed the brutal nature of the growing season (some sites we collected only 45% of normal production), many yielded healthy fruit that fermented beautifully. Of particular interest this year is the intense color of the Nebbiolo, an aftereffect of the particular conditions in July.

Perhaps the greatest difficulties we experienced were with Dolcetto, a delicate varietal that suffers with cold nights in early September - the cold causes the plant to drop its berries. We had to pick extremely carefully as just shaking the vine would make grapes fall. We were able to get in nearly full production of Dolcetto but the picking took far longer than in an ordinary year due to the care that was needed. As usual, our crack picking crew was up to the challenge and brought in lovely fruit.

Overall, it was a long and difficult vintage, but in the end we are thankful for the sun and warmth that came in mid-September and allowed us to bring in ripe fruit. Those 3 warm, sunny weeks literally saved the vintage. The arrival of the last load of fruit was an opportunity for celebration but also for relief!

Recent Tastings: Older Vintages from Luciano's Personal Cellar 

 

Once in  while, we open an older bottle to see how it is maturing and developing (but also to enjoy the result of our work!). This section of the Newsletter is to share any recent tasting of older vintages with you.

In July we took the opportunity to take a look at the development of the lovely and drinkable 2005 Le Vigne Barolo, five years after the original release.

The 2005 vintage was warmer than 2006, similar in some ways to 2004. A warm spring after a wet winter raised fears of another scorcher like 2003, but cooler temps in July and August mitigated the heat effects. Picking had already begun when the huge rainstorm that arrived the 3rd of October hit; the rains continued for 6 days. We waited for the fruit to dry out and continued picking thereafter. Careful work in the vineyard after the vines dried out and our usual field selection yielded excellent fruit.

 

Cantina Tasting Note: 
(July 2014): The vintage gave us wines of unique character that are hitting their plateau of maturity about now. The nose shows aromas of black cherries, licorice and tea leaves, while the palate shows the lacy, chalky tannins that are characteristic of the 2005 vintage, supported by lovely, ripe red and black fruits. Balanced, harmonious and persistent in the mouth. This has a long life ahead of it. Drink now-2027.

"The 2005 Barolo Le Vigne opens with fresh, high-toned aromas that meld into a core of perfumed red fruits. There is notable vibrancy to the fruit, and although the 2005 is a relatively small-scaled vintage for this wine, the balance is exceptional. The Le Vigne has more than enough fruit to follow through all the way to the close, where notes of raspberry jam offer a final burst of intensity. Le Vigne is made from a number of parcels in Vignane (Barolo), Conterni and Ceretta (Monforte) and Merli (Novello). In 2005 the harvest took place in the first two weeks of October. The wines were vinified separately, then racked into 500-liter barrels. The final blend was assembled in the summer of 2006. Every year I taste through the various parcels separately and every year I am amazed by the way the final blend transcends the quality of the individual wines. Simply put, Le Vigne is a gem of a wine from Luciano Sandrone. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021."

"Full, deep red-ruby. Perfumed, nuanced nose offers pretty sour red cherry, raspberry and violet notes complicated by an intense spiciness that is textbook nebbiolo. Dense and sweet, but with lovely vinosity giving shape to the penetrating flavors of dark cherry, dried flowers and mint.  Finishes bright and very long, with serious but smooth tannins and wonderful acid balance. A spicy, pure nebbiolo that shows just how good the best 2005 Barolos can be. Sandrone harvested the grapes for Le Vigne between October 1 and 15, which means that at least some of the grapes were picked after the October rains that spelled trouble for so many other producers in the area, but he has always maintained that his attentive, painstaking vineyard work allowed him to pick fully ripe grapes while avoiding rot."

"The splendid 2005 Le Vigne, re-released this year in limited quantities, boasts wonderfully fresh purple fruit and violet aromatics; an extract-rich texture like liquid silk; and a horizontal finish that combines outstanding energy and perfume. In my September tasting I scored it a solid 95 points: it's a remarkable example of its vintage."

Meet the Staff: Ludovica Renolfi

The newest addition to the Sandrone Office Staff, Ludovica was born and raised in Piedmont and studied Asian and African Culture and Languages at the University of Turin, where she received her degree. During and after her studies, she worked in the tourism sector, organizing tours and events in Egypt, Greece, the Canaries, Uzbekistan and especially Russia. She is fluent in Italian, Russian, English and Arabic.

When she decided to come back to her roots in the Langhe, she decided to focus on the wine sector as it allowed her to better follow the passion for wine that she inherited from her father, who studied at the the Enological School of Alba. Here at the Sandrone Winery, her responsibilities center around client and guest relations, as well as orders and logistics. Often hers is the first voice one hears when calling the winery.

In her spare time she is passionate about horses, Latin American dancing, and most recently, cooking.

In 2010, a cool late August and early September gave us a long growing season and the resulting wines are ones of depth and structure. This vintage bears some similarity to 2006, where power, ripe fruit and potential longevity are combined to an incredible degree, but perhaps 2010 is a bit more elegant and will have a longer life ... These are wines to cellar! The wines were in tonneaux for 24 months and were assembled and bottled in January and February of 2013. The early press on 2010 Barolo is impressive and we were especially honored to have earned high marks from Antonio Galloni (see "Recent Press" section in the newsletter for his notes on the vintage and our wines). 2010 was also the first vintage where we included a part of the upper Baudana vineyard fruit (in the commune of Serralunga) in the Barolo Le Vigne bottling, and the result is a deeper and more structured wine.


 
The Valmaggiore area is always somewhat warmer than in the Barolo, as is normal, and the 2012 shows the focused fruit and acidity typical of the growing season. The fruit had ripened perfectly by the first week of October and we picked parcel-by-parcel under excellent conditions. The first parcels were obviously from the warmest parts: the center and west-facing parts of the bowl, then the east side of the bowl, followed by the edges.

2012 Barbera d'Alba

The 2012 Barbera shows the character of the coolish growing season, with fresh, vibrant acids front and center, ably supported by ripe black fruits and notes of oak. Our Barbera saw about 30% new oak in this vintage, as Luciano did not want this more structured wine to be dominated by oak notes. What he and Luca achieved is a balanced, brightly fresh and fruity wine of impeccable typicity.

 

Cantina Tasting Notes:

August 2014: Aromas of juicy black fruits, cola nut and vanilla notes soar from the glass, tempered with a subtle minerality that gives definition to the precise Barbera nose. In the mouth, the freshness typical of Barbera is front and center, which keeps the ripe fruit from becoming overbearing. The finish is pure and long, very bright with red and black fruit notes. Drink now-2020.

Sibi et Paucis Gold SeP

 

Along with new current releases, we typically release a few bottles of our "Sibi et Paucis" library wines. This year Luciano decided to wait an additional two years and release the 2006 Barolo bottlings on their 10th anniversary in 2016. Thus this autumn we have no new library release bottles.

 

The Sibi et Paucis program is our library re-release program (not a riserva wine) and more information can be found here on our website.

 

Please check with your country's importer for availability of these bottles - previously released vintages may still be in their supply.

 

Only 1500 bottles of each of the three Nebbiolo-based wines are kept back for the Sibi et Paucis program, and most are allocated to restaurant wine lists. If you see the metallic stamp on a bottle, you can be assured that the wine spent 4 years in Luciano's archive library cellar - perfect provenance!

Our Barolo spends at least 24 months in wooden casks and per DOCG laws cannot be released until the beginning of the 4th calendar year after the vintage. So there is a good bit of wine down in our cellar! We do not use barriques here at Sandrone, instead Luciano prefers to use tonneaux (500 liter casks of French oak). Also, the Barbera and Valmaggiore spend 12-14 months in wood. We use about 20-25% new wood on the Barolo, 30-50% new wood on the Barbera and only used, neutral casks for the Valmaggiore.

The 2012 Baroli have been in tonneaux for almost 24 months and will be bottled in the next few months. The 2012 Barbera and Nebbiolo Valmaggiore were bottled in January and were just released. The 2011 Barolo were assembled and bottled in January-February of 2014 and will be released in September of 2015. While it is impossible to talk about what the wines still in wood will specifically taste like when they are released in the future, we would like to tell you a bit about how the Barolo are developing.

2011: The Barolo were in cask for 2 years and were assembled in December 2013 and bottled in January 2014. The warm Cannubi site gave us grapes that embody the best attributes of the season: amazing perfume of strawberries, cherries and fresh roses with beautiful ripe fruit in the mouth. A big surprise is Le Vigne, which has changed somewhat due to a switch of the component vineyards: we gave up our long-term leases on Conterni and Cerretta in the commune of Monforte, and added the Villero vineyard from Castiglione, which adds mid-palate richness and structure, and further fruit from the Upper Baudana planting from Serralunga, which adds great tannic structure to the wine (a portion of the Baudana fruit was also used in the 2010 Le Vigne). We have very high expectations for this wine, and the further addition of the Serralunga fruit should make it even more age-worthy. The wine shows deep, penetrating aromas of black fruits and licorice and has incredible presence in the mouth. This wine truly embodies the old Barolo adage of the "iron fist in the velvet glove."

2012: A long, even growing season of exceptional quality was the characteristic of this year. The wines show generous and forward fruit but with more structure and tannin than some of the warm recent vintages, thus the 2012s require some patience to reach their peak. As the wines develop, we see the character of a more classic vintage emerging, showing good acidity and structure. Cannubi Boschis, lower in the valley and from a warmer site, gives us a fruit-driven wine; Le Vigne, from higher-altitude plots, shows more tightness and structure. In 2012, Luciano made 2 experiments with fruit from various Le Vigne vineyards: a tank vinified with the stems from a plot of exceptionally ripe Nebbiolo and a tank macerated for 4 weeks on the skins. Both of these tanks will be incorporated into the Le Vigne bottling. Luciano's goal with these experiments - as always - is to improve quality, drinkability and more fully express the typicity of Nebbiolo grown in the Barolo. Barbera in 2012 is bright, fruity and very quaffable; Valmaggiore 2012 is a balanced, expressive wine of delicate and elegant aromatics and structure.

2013: A difficult, wet and cold spring gave way to sunny and warm conditions a week before flowering, and the ensuing summer was warm but not particularly hot, except for an 8-day heatwave in late July/early August. August was less hot than usual and a 3-day rain the first week of September drastically cooled the area. Uneven weather patterns forced us to carefully pick parcel-by-parcel as grapes reached optimum ripeness. The Dolcetto suffered a bit from the early cool weather but the health of the fruit at picking time was excellent, though alcohol levels will be a half-point lower than usual. Late September and early October gave us warm, sunny days and good picking conditions, and we were able to harvest near-normal quantities of exceptionally balanced, mature Nebbiolo and Barbera. It is too early to talk about specific taste profiles of the new individual wines but Luciano and Luca are very happy with the overall high quality. Malolactic fermentation finished the first week of February and the wines will continue to develop during their time in tonneaux.

2014: The first truly difficult growing season since 2002 and 2003, but not the disaster the press has made it out to be. After 10 very good to otherworldly vintages, having a difficult vintage is not the end of the world - we have much for which to be thankful, not least of which is the wines we made this year. The wines have been racked to tonneaux and will go through the malolactic fermentation over the next 2 months.
