Boy Scout Troop 15, of Richmondville spent the weekend of July 23-24 doing volunteer service work at the Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater, NY. The work that the Troop did involved working with a Park Ranger, cleaning out a stretch of roadside ditch that had been choked with leaves and plants, causing water to flow out over the road instead of in the ditch. The plants were chopped out, and the leaves were raked out and all the material was wheelbarrowed away and dumped elsewhere out of the way. 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and the aim of Troop 15 is to visit as many local National Parks as possible to do volunteer service.

In addition to completing the assigned task, the Troop learned about the Battle of Saratoga, which was considered to be the turning point of the Revolutionary War. British General John Burgoyne had planned to split the colonies by advancing south from Canada, along the Hudson River, and expecting to meet up with Col. Barry St. Leger, advancing from the west; and Sir William Howe, advancing north from New York City. But Howe decided not to advance north, and St. Leger, although he had besieged Ft. Stanwix to the west, changed his mid when he learned that General Benedict Arnold had raised a strong force. St. Leger retreated to Canada. Without these reinforcements, Burgoyne was eventually defeated at Saratoga and the British Army surrendered its arms to the Americans there. Because of the American victory at Saratoga, France decided to join forces with the Americans.

Scouts participating were Hector Vega, Tyler Hotaling, Gabe Warner (Senior Patrol Leader), Jose Vega, and Kaleb Benac. Leaders were Scoutmaster George Horning and Assistant Scoutmaster Amy White.
