Troop 56 Lawyersville NY took a once in a lifetime Trip to the Florida Keys.

Dear Mr. Steiner,

My name is Connor Fancher and I am a Life Scout in Troop 56 - Lawyersville. I am sending you the following information on our recently completed camping trip for your consideration to include in a future issue of the Scoutwire or other Council publications.

On June 27, 2016, fourteen scouts and seven adult leaders from Troop 56 - Lawyersville flew from Albany to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to camp and boat in the Florida Keys. While away, the scouts worked on requirements for the Cooking, Camping,Fishing and Birding Merit Badges.

The Troop began the trip by renting two houseboats
on Plantation Key (Islamorada) to explore the Florida Bay for four days. Undeterred by mechanical issues with one of the boats, the scouts enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding. While snorkeling, the boys observed an abundance of sea life including dolphins, barracuda, eels, stingrays, jelly fish and sharks.

While fishing from the houseboats, the boys caught several
Bonnet Head Sharks.TheScouts also managed to free about a dozen spiny lobsters which they located on the sea floor in several abandoned crab traps.

The Scouts next traveled to Sugarloaf Key where they camped for four nights. While there, the Scouts spent a day at Bahia Honda State Park which included snorkeling at the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Most scouts said snorkeling at Looe Key was the highlight of the trip due to being able to observe over 100 species of fish which included varieties of Parrot Fish, Tangs, Barracuda, Sea F
ans, Angel Fish, Blenneys, Sergeant Majors as well as numerous species of coral.
All scouts explored Looe Key despite the one to two foot ocean swells they encountered while snorkeling.

During a free a day at Sugarloaf Key, some scouts opted to visit the Dry Tortugas National Park and tour Ft. Jefferson while others chartered fishing boats or chose to relax in the pool. While charter fishing, the boys caught Barracudas, Mango Snappers and Lemon Sharks. A half-hour battle with a 100 plus pound Tarpon was lost by one group of scouts when their line broke during the struggle.

The last full day at Sugarloaf Key was spent visiting Key West on the 4th of July. While in Key West, the scouts visited an aquarium and explored the festive boardwalk. Later that evening, the group enjoyed the sunset performers at Mallory Square and fireworks.

Troop 56 would like to thank all the members of the community who assisted the scouts raise funds for this trip by ordering homemade
pies at Thanksgiving and by purchasing barbequed chicken halves this past May. A special thanks also goes out to Mr. Peter Nichols who assisted his son Patrick Nichols and Marcus Capobianco plan the trip.
