fire-chitFirem'n Chit Certificate

The requirements for the Firem'n Chit have been updated.  This certification grants a Scout the right to carry fire-lighting devices (matches, lighters, etc.) and build campfires.

The revised requirements are:
  1. Read and understand fire use and safety rules from The Boy Scout Handbook.
  2. Build campfires only when necessary and when you have permission.
  3. Minimize campfire impacts using existing campfire lays when available consistent with the principles of Leave No Trace. All flammable material must be cleared at least 5 feet in all directions from fire.
  4. Safely use and store fire starting materials.
  5. See that fires are tended to at all times.
  6. Make sure that water and/or fire tools are readily available and promptly report any wildfire to the proper authorities.
  7. Use the cold-out test to make sure the fire is cold out and make sure the fire lay is cleaned before leaving it.
  8. Follow the Outdoor Code and the principles of Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly!

Cards with new requirements should be available at Scout Stores later this summer.

fishingCub Scout Fishing Derby

It was a fantastic weekend for fishing. At our First Annual Cub Scout Fishing Derby at Camp Kingsley over 75 Scouts and Scouters caught over 150 fish, including bass, sunfish and bullhead.

The largest fish measured was 18 3/4", caught by Cub Scout Wyatt Armstrong from Pack 17 in Morrisville. Adam Vadney (from Pack 16 Little Falls) and Wyatt tied for the most fish caught that day, reeling in 11 each.

Creativity was flowing as well; Brandi Charboneau (Cherry Valley) brought in a fish using a plunger, winning the award for Most Unique Way to Catch a
Fish.

Connor Morgan won the award for Best Fish Story for his unique tale about a rainbow flying fish.

Adults also spent some time catching fish, and Eric Charboneau led the way with a 17" bass and Joe Yates catching 8 fish. It was a fun day for all and we are already looking forward to next year!  Thank you for attending and joining us on a beautiful Saturday!

Troop
15 of Richmondville visited Ft. Stanwix National Monument in Rome, NY on June 25-26. The Scouts chose to conduct some needed service at the Fort, in commemoration of the National Park Service's 100th anniversary this year. Troop members cleaned out old straw from the soldiers' barracks. These barracks consisted of large wooden platform beds, holding about 12 soldiers each, covered with a layer of straw for bedding. The troop filled seventy-two 42 gallon trash bags with the old straw. With the straw cleaned out, the National Park Service personnel can now perform needed repairs on the platform beds before laying fresh straw. The work was hot and dusty, but Troop 15 was undaunted!

Troop 15 members participating were Gabe Warner (Senior Patrol Leader), Tyler Hotaling, Jackson Bradley, Hector Vega, Jose Vega, Scoutmaster George Horning, Assistant Scoutmaster Amy White, and Troop Committee Member Max Horning.
