Development Camp Overview
 
Our two day camp is open to all club administrators, team managers, officials, coaches, and SKATERS.  Sessions will be held in the classroom, in the gym, and on the ice.  Topics will cater to everyone from the grassroots of synchronized skating right up to the National level competitors.  Participants will be split into groups based on levels.  Join us for an action-packed weekend of Synchronized Skating! Even non-synchronized skaters and coaches would benefit from, and enjoy, some of the on-ice sessions focused on individual skills.

Saturday, September 12 - The main focus this day is mostly classroom with the technical update and presentation by feature presenters

Officials Edge
 
On behalf of Jodi Abbott, Section Officials Coordinating Committee Chair, we welcome all Officials to a new skating season. The Officials Edge will now be published as a monthly feature in the In the Loop e-newsletter to stay in touch with all Section Officials. Officials will be receiving regular communications and updates through the Officials Edge and the Officials Coordinating Committee welcomes comments, suggestions and feedback throughout the season to grow and strengthen our officials community.

Technical Updates
Throughout the summer there have been several technical updates posted to the ISU and Skate Canada Info Center. Please visit those websites to view the latest updates and news for the 2015-2016 skating season.
 
2015-2016 Registration
Registration for the 2015-2016 season will be available around August 20. Prior to officiating at a competition or evaluating at a test day, remember that you must be registered as an official with Skate Canada. To become registered, you may contact your local Skate Canada club and request that they register you as an official. If you require any assistance in contacting a club, please email Kelly Havixbeck at [email protected]
 
2015 Synchro Development Camp
Officials are encouraged to attend the Synchro Development Camp hosted by the Section, September 12-13, 2015. There is no charge for officials to participate, as it qualifies as an update clinic. Complete details and registration are available under the Synchro section of this newsletter.
 
International DIO/VRO Operations - Call for Applications
In the Notice Of Spring Meeting for the Officials Assignment and Promotion Committee, there was a call for applications for International DIO/VRO Replay Operators. The OAP is putting out a final call for applications for International DIO/VRO Operators. Please note the important information below:
 
1.       If you applied in the Spring, you do not have to reapply, we have your application on file, and you will be considered with all other applications.
2.       Please refer to the Notice of Spring Meeting for the requirements to apply, which can be found on the Info Centre here: https://info.skatecanada.ca/hc/en-ca/articles/204254490-Notice-of-Officials-Assignment-and-Promotion-Committee-Spring-2015-Meeting

Try Out Synchronized Skating!

Edmonton Synchronized Skating Club is currently hosting their summer synchronized skating skills camp. If you are interested in learning synchronized skating or joining a team for the upcoming season it is not too late!
 
Final Team Tryouts/Placements:
 
Team placement for all levels up to and including pre-novice will be held on Wednesday August 26, 2015 at Castle Downs Arena (11520 153 Avenue).
 
6:30 pm -7:30 pm  - beginner/elementary/juvenile levels
  • Skaters must be under the age of 15 as of July 1, 2015
  • Skaters must be passed CanSkate Stage 3. 
*Please note: this is not a learn to skate program. It is important that all skaters pose basic skating skills. Any skater who has not yet passed level 5 CanSkate, will be required to wear a helmet on the ice.
 
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm - juvenile, pre-novice levels
  • Skaters must be under the age of 19 as of July 1, 2015
  • Skaters must be passed CanSkate Stage 6.  

Levels including intermediate, open and adult are asked to attend:
 
Tuesday August 25, 2015 7-9:00PM at Castledowns Arena A
Thursday August 27, 2015 7-9:00PM at Castledowns Arena A
 
  • Intermediate ages must be 12- 24 yrs old, with a desire to compete and qualify for the National Championships in Waterloo, ON.  Silver/Gold tests or previous synchro experience an asset.
  • Open skaters must be at least 12 yrs old with no upper age limit, skaters must have a desire to compete and qualify for the National Championships in Waterloo, ON.  Silver/Gold tests or previous synchro experience an asset.
  • Adult skaters must be 19 yrs of age and over, with a desire to compete at the Adult National Championships.

2015-2016 Inclusive Skating Project

Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut is pleased to support Inclusive Skating opportunities through a grant application process for the 2015-2016 season:
  • Section clubs (and partners such as Alberta Sport & Recreation Association for the Blind) may be eligible to apply for a grant. Funds must be used for planned Inclusive Skating (IS) programming within the 2015-2016 season
  • Funds must be used for one or more of the following areas:
    • Coaching support (e.g. IS coach training opportunities, IS coaching fees, Program Assistant training, Program Assistant Recognition, etc.)
    • Club support (e.g. IS program ice fees, IS Skate Canada membership fees, club IS program fees, etc.)
    • Event support (e.g. CanSkate Element Events costs for IS athletes, competition-related expenses for IS athletes competing or participating in an event)
    • Adaptive equipment support (e.g. any individual specialized equipment including skates, helmets, frames, braces, or specialized equipment for club IS programming use)
    • Clubs that receive funding must provide year-end reporting in the form of photos, storytelling and receipts.
    • $10,000.00 available funds to be divided amongst approved requests throughout the season. Any funds left-over from the first application deadline would be carried over and available for January 2016
Information and deadline dates will be distributed and advertised to Section Clubs in September 2015.

Congratulations to Alyssa Vankosky of the Edson Figure Skating Club!

Alyssa is always the first on the ice and the last to get off.  She is a role model to skaters both younger and older than herself as she tries hard the whole session and encourages others to achieve their goals.  She also regularly PAs on the club's CanSkate sessions.

Nash has an obvious love for skating. He has a contagious smile and great work ethic. Nash stays on task and listens extremely well to the coaches and program assistants. At just 3 years old, Nash has a strong base on most fundamental skills under his belt.

Congratulations to Allison Edwards of the Grovedale Figure Skating Club! 

Allison  is always with the CanSkate parents acting as the liaison between the parents, executive and coaches.  She is also the membership chair and helps with all the day to day activities.  She always has a smile on her face and a very friendly demeanor.  A very helpful volunteer!
