CanSkate Connection

Thank you to everyone that attended the CanSkate workshop at our recent Section ACGM.  At the end of the workshop there were 3 unanswered questions:

Q1. Is music available online to download?

A1. Skate Canada has 10 downloadable songs under Members Only/Technical & Programs/NEW CanSkate/CanSkate Music.  Clubs are expected to create their own playlist to facilitate warm-ups, transition signals and fast track, lesson time, group activity and cool-downs.  Pre-made playlists are not available because each club is unique in terms of session length, and number and type of skaters which affects the music length needed.

Q2. Where are signs on websites? Under CanSkate?

A2. CanSkate Skill Signs can be found on the Skate Canada website under Members Only/Technical & Programs/NEW CanSkate/Workable Documents and Templates/CanSkate Skill Signs.  These signs work well when attached to toilet plungers and are incorporated on the circuits!  Balance, Control and Agility Station Signs are not yet available - more information coming soon from national office.

Q3. When you referred to the use of transparencies what did you mean & how are you using them?

A3. Some clubs in Eastern Ontario have printed the CanSkate circuits on transparency sheets to lay each fundamental stage on top of each other, this visually shows you how the circuit needs to be adjusted for stages 1-6.

There is an upcoming CanSkate Clinic in Edmonton on Saturday, August 23 - the focus for this session is planning for the 2014/2015 season. Come prepared with your anticipated program details i.e. # of skaters, Coaches, PAs and leave with a weekly session plan to implement at your club! Registration details coming soon.

Component Seminar - The Next Level

Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut was pleased to bring in facilitators from across the country for a two day seminar on skating components for our coaches and officials. The seminar was held in Calgary at the Glencoe Club, June 14 & 15, 2014. The Section invited coaches and officials to explore the program components of figure skating. Participants had the opportunity to learn about how to distinguish between average component marks and great component marks. Over 60 coaches and officials participated in on and off-ice sessions relating to edge flow and quality with world-renowned Edge Specialist and Choreographer, Anne Schelter.  Presentations reviewing the process of quality recognition and the awarding of program component marks were presented by ISU Officials, Leslie Keen, Karen Howard and Pam Chislett. ISU Communication 1861 was reviewed by ISU Technical Specialist, Scott Davis.

Thank you to the Glencoe Club for providing a wonderful facility to host the seminar and for the Alberta Sport Connection for their support. Thank you also to the skaters who demonstrated for the officials and coaches throughout the weekend.

Young Citizen's Canada History Contest

Lauren de Winton from the Okotoks Skating Club was asked to create a Heritage Fair project at school on a topic they were passionate about. Lauren loves skating, so she chose to do her project on "The Evolution of Canadian Figure Skating." Lauren has advanced to compete in the National 'Young Citizen's' competition, where she needed to create a 3-4 minute video about her heritage fair project - with a goal to make the audience as excited about her topic as she is. Lauren uses a great quote at the beginning of her movie, "You see, figure skating is not only what we do... it's who we are." Click here to support Lauren and view her video.
