Special Olympics Athletes at the 2014 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut STARSkate & Adult Championships Presented by Alberta Figure Skating Foundation
Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut and Special Olympics Alberta are very proud of our athletes competing in the 2014 STARSkate Championships presented by Alberta Figure Skating Foundation. 23 athletes, 8 coaches, and 4 volunteer team leaders will make the trek to St. Albert for the event on March 7-9, 2014, and it will also serve as their provincial qualifier. From there, the Special Olympics athletes will move on to the 2015 Special Olympics Winter Provincials, to be held in Grande Prairie.
We are most excited about the fact that this will be the biggest participation by Special Olympics athletes at an inclusive event hosted within our Section! We hope that this experience will be a rewarding one for all involved, and that it will lead to more participation in Section competitions next season . We are thankful to the Alberta Sport Connection for their support and grant funding to help these athletes compete.
We wish all of our Special Olympics athletes the best of luck in their performances and will be cheering everyone on!

The Brian Pockar Male & Mini Seminar was held at The Glencoe Club in Calgary, Alberta on February 16 - 17. 2014. There were 34 male skaters in attendance ranging from Pre-Juvenile to Senior.
The skaters were treated to the expertise of Jan Ullmark and Greg Folk for their on ice sessions, where emphasis was on quality of basic skating movement to allow progression to triple and quadruple jumps. It was very fun to observe the progress over the two days.
Thank you to The Glencoe Club for housing the seminar once again.

Continuous Education Program (CEP) Online Form Skate Canada has developed an electronic CEP form for coaches to track and submit eligible activities versus doing so using the paper form. The electronic form and "how to" video is now available on Members Only under Coaches. Although coaches are able to easily log CEP activities electronically, we strongly advise them to retain proof (receipt, facilitator signatures, etc.) of their completed activities on file for verification purposes. Skate Canada will randomly select coaches to submit proof of activities on a weekly basis. Coaches may continue to submit a paper copy of your statement of activities to the Skate Canada national office, however, this online form was designed to improve the processing time in which your Skate Canada profile is updated with your CEP status. All Skate Canada Professional Coaches wanting to register for the 2014-2015 membership season will be required to have earned a minimum of five CEP credits. These credits must be earned between September 1, 2012 and June 30, 2014.
Further information on the CEP, including a Question and Answer document containing frequently asked questions, can be found on Members Only under Coaches -> Registration Documents and Forms.

Steps have been developed so that awareness and knowledge can be provided to every young athlete, allowing them to walk away from practice and competition with a positive self-image. For more information on the face sheet that will help parents, athletes and coaches identify and deal with such issues as bullying, abuse and harassment in sport, please click here.
