CanSkate Connection

Dear Mr. Sketch,

Please remove orange, lime green and yellow from your marker packs.

Signed,

CanSkate Coach

Drawing the NEW CanSkate circuits takes practice but they are well worth the effort!  Here are a few tips for creating circuits on the ice.

1. Start with good markers that work best for you i.e. Mr. Sketch (not orange, lime green or yellow), Bingo Dabbers, or big black jumbo markers from Dollarama.  If you need assistance making circles that don't look like eggs try placing markers on a scribe!  Markers can also be attached to the end of a hockey stick.

2. Be consistent, always using the same skill drawing allows the skaters to easily identify what they should be doing on the circuit.  Refer to the legend on page 4-20-4-23 of the New CanSkate Manual.

3. Skate the skill as you draw it so that you get the desired results.  Drawings that are too small or too close together hinder learning.  Ensure your drawings depict big strides, deep edges, long glides, etc.

Check the Skate Canada : Alberta-NWT/Nunavut website for upcoming CanSkate Update Clinics.

Coaches Corner

Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) Professional Development Policy

As recently communicated by CAC, the Professional Development (PD) policy that comes into effect this January will require certified coaches to complete PD points over a set time frame in order to maintain their NCCP certification. The PD policy aligns with Skate Canada's mandatory Continuous Education Program (CEP), which requires all coaches to complete a minimum of five CEP credits between September 1, 2012 and June 30, 2014 in order to register as a coach for the 2014-2015 membership season.

Skate Canada and CAC are currently aligning the requirements of both programs to ensure that Skate Canada coaches can maintain their NCCP status without having to submit professional development activities to both organizations. To help facilitate the process, an online version of the CEP statement was released on Monday, January 20, 2014. The CEP electronic form will enable coaches to enter, track and submit all activities online so that Skate Canada can then transfer this information to CAC's database.
