Leanna Caron Elected as President of Skate Canada
Ottawa, ON: At the 100th Annual Convention and General Meeting (ACGM) of the association in Ottawa, delegates elected Leanna Caron as its new President.
Caron, who grew up in Timmins, Ont., was elected for a two-year team. An International Skating Union (ISU) level official, she was first elected to the Skate Canada Board of Directors in 2008 and has both led and served on numerous domestic and international committees.
Her vision as President is to "continue the success of this leading sport organization as we work to not only develop the sport internationally, but to ensure that all Canadians are exposed to the lifelong joy of skating." [Read More]

Dan Thompson Named to Lead Skate Canada as CEO
OTTAWA, ON: A leading sport and strategic marketing specialist will take the helm of Skate Canada later this month. Dan Thompson will become the Chief Executive Officer of the national body responsible for teaching Canadians to skate and preparing athletes to compete at the highest levels of figure skating.
Thompson was named to the position by the Skate Canada Board of Directors. "Dan brings a true breadth of knowledge and skills to this leadership role," said Skate Canada President Beno�t Lavoie. "An Olympian himself, Dan understands the requirements of preparing athletes for elite competition. Combined with his marketing and management experience, we have a leader who can truly inspire the organization. Delegates from across Alberta-NWT/Nunavut delegates were in attendance at the 2013 Skate Canada ACGM. At the Awards Banquet, Brenda Hart was recognized as the Skate Canada Volunteer of Excellence for Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut. Ravi Walia was recognized for the 2013 Competitive Skate Coach Award of Excellence.  Congratulations to Rod Garossino who was elected to the Skate Canada Board of Directors. Rod is a Physical Education graduate from UBC specializing in Sport and Event marketing. He currently works for Encana as a Community Involvement Advisor. Rod has nineteen years of diverse experience in corporate, non-profit and agency roles. Also, thank you to Jodi Abbott and Marilyn Chidlow for their service on the Skate Canada Board. Marilyn Chidlow was named as an honourary Skate Canada Member at the AGM.

CanSkate Connection
This past season many coaches, program assistants and administrators in our section participated in CanSkate Update clinics and workshops. We are pleased with everyone's effort and interest to learn more about the new program. As we head into Skate Canada's second year of the soft launch, the goal is for full implementation by September 2014. In order to assist clubs towards implementing ALL program components, CanSkate Resource Team Members - Tammy Greidanus and Leona Boyle are offering club consultations in 3 formats. CanSkate Consultation Format 1 - Have a CanSkate Resource Team Member run a CanSkate session with you at your club. This will involve: - 1-2 hours prior to a CanSkate Session - Planning for your session (with the CanSkate Resource Team Member coaches and program assistants)
- 45-60 min. CanSkate session (On-ice with your CanSkate kids, coaches, program assistants, and the CanSkate Resource Team Member)
- 1 hour Follow-up (with the CanSkate Resource Team Member and coaches)
CanSkate Consultation Format 2 - Have a CanSkate Resource Team Member observe your session and provide feedback. This will involve: - 45-60 min. CanSkate session (observed by the CanSkate Resource Team Member)
- 1 hour Follow-up (with the CanSkate Resource Team Member and coaches)
CanSkate Update Clinic Format 3 - Have a CanSkate Resource Team Member run a clinic for your club and/or surrounding clubs. This will involve: - 4-6 hour clinic at your club covering the following topics: new program objectives and components, on-ice skills and circuits, roles of the Program Assistant, planning and implementation strategies, teaching aids, music, and more

2013 ISU Adult Figure Skating Competition
Obertsdorf, Germany May 15-18, 2013
Congratulations to all the Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut skaters who competed at the 2013 ISU Adult Figure Skating Championships. Section skaters brought home three medals: Natasha Taylor won Bronze in the Masters Free Skate event, Denis LaRochelle won Silver in the Silver Men Free Skate event, and Annette Nymeyer won Silver in the Gold Women Artistic event.

Lifelong Education Vitally Important to Coach Michelle Leigh
Michelle Leigh and figure skating are synonymous. Think of one, and the other immediately comes to mind. It's been that way since she fell in love with the sport as a five-year-old, attracted above all by jumping and performing. Serious training began at the age of eight and before long she was a national competitor, winning the Novice bronze medal in 1977. In 1979, a badly ruptured Achilles tendon at the age of 16 abruptly ended her promising career. [Read More]

Therefore, the position of the Peace Region Representative is now considered a casual vacancy and will be filled by appointment by the Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Board of Directors to complete the 2013-2015 term.
