Meg Oshada and Kennedy Zaytsoff Bring Home Four Medals for Canada!
Special Olympic athletes, including Alberta's very own Meg and Kennedy, competed at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games from January 29 to February 5 in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Meg Oshada of the Canmore FSC, coached by Barb Prystai, Devon Nychka and Mayisha, and Kennedy Zaytsoff of the Strathmore FSC, coached by Barb Prystai, Lindsay Woodcock and Leanne Woodcock, arrived home each wearing two medals. In Ice Dancing, Kennedy won gold in Level 4 and Meg took silver in Level 1. In Singles, Kennedy won gold in Level 5 and Meg took silver in Level 3. Congratulations to Meg and Kennedy on their spectacular performance at this prestigious event!

Taylor LeClaire Selected to Attend the 2013 Skate Canada National Development Camp  Congratulations Taylor! On April 25-28, 2013, twenty-seven athletes from across Canada will attend the 2013 Skate Canada National Development Camp. These athletes were selected based on a combination of age and performance throughout the 2012-2013 season. The camp will focus on skating skills and technical skill development.

Kaetlyn Osmond Arrives Home from the 2013 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 
Kaetlyn competed in Osaka, Japan at the 2013 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships from February 6-11, 2013. Kaetlyn finished ahead of Amelie Lacoste and Julianne Seguin, placing seventh overall with 159.38 points.

News & Views from Athlete Development
Brian Pockar Male and Mini-Male Seminar
Annually, the Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section hosts the Brian Pockar Male Seminar, which focuses on the development of male skaters in their personal journey of figure skating. The Pockar Foundation generously contributes to this seminar every year. Thanks to this generous contribution over the past decade, many promising young male figure skaters have benefited.
The Section will once again host the seminar February 17-18, 2013 in Calgary, Alberta thanks to a grant received from the Alberta, Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. The seminar will feature Bryce Davison, a World Bronze Medalist, three-time Canadian Pairs Champion and two-time Olympian.

Freedom On Ice Seminar with Janet LynnJanet Lynn will be hosting a seminar April 2-5, 2013 in Canmore, AB. The seminar will include off-ice and on-ice presentations that explore good basic skating technique and the "Classic Workout". Quadruple Gold Awards are awarded to skaters who have completed all four disciplines of Free skate, Dance, Skating Skills, and Interpretive at the Gold Level and are members of the AFSF as of January 31, 2013.

Duso's Skater of the Month
Congratulations Janelle McGinley of Special Olympics Edmonton, Duso's January Skater of the Month!
The Duso's Skater of the Month for January is Janelle McGinley. Janelle was the 2012 "Female Athlete of the Year" for both Special Olympics Edmonton and Special Olympics Alberta. She is involved in many sports and her dedication and work ethic are unmatched. Janelle has a great attitude, is always wanting to learn more and is always willing to help her fellow skaters. Janelle skates in the Special Olympics program in Edmonton.

Duso's Helping Hand of the Month  Congratulations Emma Walker of the Medicine Hat Skating Club, Duso's January Helping Hand of the Month!
The Duso's Helping Hand of the Month for January is Emma Walker from the Medicine Hat SC. Emma is a great example of a figure skater, athlete and volunteer.
Emma is a wonderful addition to the CanSkate program. She volunteers her time to work alongside the coaches and skaters within her club program. Emma always welcomes everyone in the club with a warm hello.
