The CanSkate Connection
Circuits, I often wonder how did I ever teach without them?
Using circuits on my CanSkate sessions has enhanced my program on so many levels:
- Circuits keep skaters moving, practicing and they utilize the entire ice surface
- Circuits build in skill progressions
- Circuits allow for one-on-one, hands-on instruction time
- Coaches can develop muscle memory through repetition in a circuit
- Circuits incorporate curves allowing skaters to explore edges and lean
- Skaters can work on more than one level at a time on a circuit
- Circuits are fun and engaging and they retain the skaters focus
The New CanSkate program provides Coaches with circuit drawings for every fundamental area - Balance, Control and Agility for all levels.

"Branching Out" Photo Contest
The theme for this year's Section ACGM is "Branching Out". As the 2012-2013 skating season kicks off, skaters are performing and perfecting their programs, prepping for synchro tryouts, lacing up skates for the very first time, or fine tuning their programs for international assignments and competitions. Over the course of this process, skaters experience "Branching Out" moments including:
- Landing a more difficult jump for the very first time
- Attending a synchro tryout as a past singles skater
- Deciding to transition from STARSkate into CompetitiveSkate
- Deciding to volunteer as a Program Assistant because they want to share their knowledge; or
- Selecting music that may be outside their comfort zone

BABY STEPS!
If you have just returned to the sport, take it one step at a time. Just because you may have mastered a skill in a previous life, that certainly doesn't mean that you still have that same skill.
Break skills down. Go back to the basics, keep it simple! The foundations of skating is all about proper positions for inside and outside edges.
