Greetings!
"An important technique of good health is ridding the mind of all unhealthy thoughts. It is important to have regular mind cleansings.
We must get rid of mental infection in order to have healthy bodies."
- Norman Vincent Peale
There are two, maybe three, times in a year when we start to think once again about paying attention to our health and get ourselves back on track. This tends to happen at the New Year, in early Spring, and right now in Autumn. Each of these particular seasons takes on the feeling of a 'new beginning', and off we go making that appointment for an annual physical, heading to the gym, fitting in a daily walk, or revisiting our morning prayer and meditation time to rekindle our spiritual health.
Just this morning was reading The Amazing Results of Positive Thinking by Dr. Peale for the second time around. What you are about to read is as brilliant and relevant at this very moment as it was decades ago. It seems that peace of mind has a direct correlation to our physical health. Positive statements such as "I am going to feel better today" and 'healing Scriptures" can make you feel instantly healthier.
Here are keys to healing and sustained good health:

"Resent is an interesting word: it comes from the Latin words meaning "to feel again." It operates in the following manner. We have an experience that is full of hurt to the personality. We resent it and so make ourselves miserable and sick by constantly re-feeling it. But, finally, the conscious mind may refuse to relive the actual painful memory. However, instead of forgiving and forgetting, it focuses the memory down into the subconscious and then the smothered , emotional reaction may break out in the form of physical pain or sickness."
"All illness may not be caused by the emotions... it makes no difference whether the disability is functional or organic. In either case, the spirit can be healed. And that is a large element in healing, even if the physical disability remains."
The 'spirit can be healed' - so long as we put the Lord our God first place and affirm our good health with positive thoughts and words. It's true - the power of God combined with our own affirmations will help us to heal and remain healthy.
Here are 'health affirmations' suggested by Dr. Peale in The Amazing Results of Positive Thinking. Recite them daily and begin to feel better:
- I see myself as whole - every organ of my body operating perfectly in harmony with God's perfect laws.
- My whole being is fulfilled with health - I think health, feel health, practice health.
- The healing grace of the great Physician Jesus Christ is flooding my life. In Him was life. His life is in me.
- I am a child of God. In Him I live and move and have my being. I am strong, vital, joyous. The kingdom of God is within me and I am grateful to God.
In the booklet The Healing Power of the Twenty-Third Psalm, comes the explanation of two Greek words: Soul and Healing. Together they mean "the healing of the mind," or as David might have said, "the restoring of the soul." And only God can heal the soul.
In this little booklet is this powerful prescription:
Read the Twenty-Third Psalm five times a day for seven days!
Take as prescribed: Read it first thing upon awakening. Read it carefully, meditatively and prayerfully. Immediately after breakfast, do exactly the same thing, then after lunch and again after dinner, and the last thing before bed. No quick, hurried reading. Think about each phrase, giving the mind time to soak up as much of the meaning as possible.
The power of this Psalm lies in the fact that it represents a positive, hopeful, faithful approach to life. Its power comes not from memorizing the words, but rather in thinking the thoughts. Try it! |
