Are you considering total hip replacement? If so, be sure to read about THR patient Tom Hammen's summertime adventures, chronicled below. You may not be one to go diving and spelunking, but you will enjoy a life without hip pain!

Hip replacement patient shares summer adventures with readers

Hi Doc!

All is good with my right total hip replacement, so I thought I'd check in and report on my progress and what I have been doing of late.

We just spent 2 weeks in Belize diving and trekking in the jungle mountains. Stayed a week on Turneffe Island 30 miles off the coast of Belize for a week of diving. The diving was world class and added more

spectacular dives to my memory and log book!

Next was a new adventure for us at Caves Branch Jungle Adventure Lodge, Belmopan, Belize. We stayed in a river view tree house. They offer all manner of adventures. The weather wasn't the best for all adventures, but we did some of the best. Some trips include river tubing and spelunking into the cave with artifacts of the Mayan Indians.

The adventure that was totally over the top and drew upon on my inner strength and added one more notch on the old adventure belt was the black hole drop. The trip was a 4 mile round trip hike through the jungle mountains, in the rain that day, with a 300ft rappel down the face of the mountain before the hike back out.

The dive trip was my 4th since my total hip replacement last November and my 1st trek on a trail in many years. Both my hips are doing great and overall I feel much better!

If anyone needs some inspiration for

their total hip replacement and what can be done after I would be happy to help. Feel free to pass on my email address.

Thanks for helping me add more adventures to my life! - Tom Hammen
