In our February newsletter we introduced you to Liz Henuset who has experienced excellent results with a breakthrough treatment for knee osteoarthritis: alpha-2-macroglobulin therapy. We promised you her story and it is included below.

We are also pleased to announce the completion of the 1000th total hip replacement surgery using the direct anterior approach. Next month we will bring you the story of 82-year old Dr. David Criswell who had one hip replaced using the posterior approach and one using the anterior approach. He'll give you a first-hand account of the difference the right approach makes!

Finally, we send our best wishes to all of the mothers in our reading audience with the hope that you will enjoy a blessed Mother's Day.

Warm regards,
Robert J. Zehr, M.D.
Pain-free knees, thanks to A2M Therapy

"I am a 59 year old female and I have been suffering with pain in my knees for 2 1/2 years. I initially saw a doctor in March of 2012 and he operated on my knee for a meniscus tear. The surgery was successful as far as the repair, but I still had a lot of pain.

"That fall I was at the Mayo Clinic and they said that I should try a cortisone shot for the pain as there really wasn't anything else that could be done at that point. I had a cortisone shot done in Florida and its effectiveness lasted  only 3 weeks and 2 days!

"I started a 3-week session of having OrthoVisc injected into my knee and that helped a little but the pain just got worse.I went back and asked the doctor if he would replace my knee. He told me to see Dr. Zehr.

"I saw Dr. Zehr immediately and he told me that I couldn't have a replacement yet. That the knee wasn't bad enough to warrant that. He gave me a cortisone shot and it immediately helped. I started an every-3-month regimen of injections and it helped tremendously.

"In August of 2014 Dr. Zehr told me of the new A2M Therapy. On December 31, 2014 I had the treatment. I left Dr. Zehr's office pain free and have been that way since.

"The A2M Therapy has improved the quality of my life immensely. I don't worry about the distance I will have to walk anymore or the number of steps I will have to go down on a staircase. The best part is that the therapy uses my own DNA and I don't have to have cortisone shots anymore!"

Dr. Zehr named "Top Doc" for 11th consecutive year

Dr. Zehr has once again been named to Gulfshore Life Magazine's list of "Top Doctors" in Southwest Florida. He has earned this distinction every year since 2004. Gulfshore Life magazine partners with Castle Connolly Medical in New York to develop a list of only the top-tier doctors in each specialty - that is, those physicians most highly recommended in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties each year. Only those physicians selected by Castle Connolly as one of America's Top Doctors are included on the local list.

The exhaustive process of naming a Castle Connolly Top Doctor begins with thousands of interviews. Because the Castle Connolly honors are determined by their peers, surveys are sent to physicians and healthcare professionals. In addition to mail and online surveys, the Castle Connolly physician-led research team makes thousands of phone calls each year, talking with leading specialists, chairs of clinical departments and vice presidents of medical affairs, seeking to identify top specialists for most diseases and procedures.

Dr. Zehr was one of the first orthopaedic surgeons in Southwest Florida to perform the minimally invasion direct anterior approach to total hip replacement and continues to lead the local medical community in hip and knee replacement surgery, complex revision joint surgery, shoulder reconstruction, arthroscopy and skeletal tumor and trauma reconstruction. With over 25 years of orthopaedic experience in complex joint reconstruction and rehabilitation, he is one of the area's most experienced orthopaedic surgeons.
