New hip is a real treat!

"I had gone to other hip surgeons and was so discouraged by their recommendations and prognosis that I almost gave up...until I heard about Dr. Zehr. I found out that he does hip surgery in an entirely different manner than the other surgeons.

"After spending time with him and his team, I knew I had found the right place. His surgery to replace my right hip gave me immediate relief.

"Within 5 weeks of my surgery I was out hiking the Appalachian Trail. Also important to me is enjoying my boat. Before surgery the limitation and pain was so great I could no longer get onto my boat. Just weeks after my surgery, here I am getting onto the boat with my operated hip!

"I am truly grateful to Dr. Zehr and his team!"

- Sincerely,

Joseph W. Hart

I'm a surgeon. I know my way around a scalpel and several other scary-looking surgical instruments. I'm right at home in an operating room. But any situation which puts you in an unfamiliar setting has the potential to result in an injury, which is why I am sharing the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' Halloween safety tips, especially the pumpkin carving tips!

Most "tips" lists simply remind us to exercise caution and use common sense when approaching something new or different. Which is why several of the AAOS' Trick-or-Treating tips are helpful in your daily walking regimen and we have seen fit to include them in the article below.

Wishing you a safe, fun-filled Halloween,
Robert J. Zehr, M.D.

Tricks to make walking a treat

As children take to the streets each year for the annual Halloween ritual of Trick-or-Treating, lots of tips appear to ensure a safe experience walking around in the dark. Many of these suggestions are good ideas for walking in general, and since walking is one of the best ways to exercise your joints, we have compiled our own list of tips for you:
  • Plan your daily walking route (or several routes for variety) and always let someone know when you leave, in which direction you are heading and when you return. Better yet, walk with a partner!
  • Choose well-traveled routes and always use designated sidewalks, crosswalks and traffic signals.
  • Never step off a curb to cross a street without first looking behind you for turning cars; you may step directly into the path of one.
  • Download a free flashlight app to your cell phone and always carry your cell phone with you.
  • Wear properly fitting clothes that generously allow for movement and wear shoes with non-slip soles.
  • Add reflective tape to your jacket, shirt, shoes or a hat. Or buy fitness wear incorporating reflective panels or stripes. Clothes designed for runners usually incorporate these elements. You don't have to be a runner to take advantage of them!
  • Beware of dogs - any dogs. Strange dogs, familiar dogs, even dogs on a leash. They are naturally protective of their territory and their owners and they cannot discern your intent.
  • Stretch gently before and after your walk to warm up and cool down your muscles.
  • If you have recently had knee or hip surgery, your physical therapist can suggest exercises to return you to a full and active walking program.

Meet X-ray Technologist Nora Honea (RT-R)

ZCO X-ray Technologist Nora Honea was born and raised in the small town of Booneville, Mississippi, which classifies her as a true Southern Belle! Nora received her Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology from Northeast Mississippi Community College and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiologic Sciences from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She is licensed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

After finishing her degrees and working for a short time in Mississippi, she accepted a job in Northwest Arkansas in the town of Bentonville. There she met her husband Nick, who is currently pursuing a degree as a nurse anesthetist at Wolford College. They have one son, Hudson, who is 3 years old and keeps them both busy playing all kinds of sports. Nora has always enjoyed "fun and sun," which makes Florida a perfect fit for her!

Moreover, Nora's strong background in both clinical and hospital radiology combined with her skill, expertise and true concern for each patient           makes her a perfect fit for ZCO! She joined the ZCO team in October 2013. With her background in various medical environments, Nora is somewhat a "Jack-of-all-trades." She strives to make sure Dr. Zehr has the most accurate x-rays with which to prescribe the best-personalized treatment plan for ZCO patients.

Happy One-Year ZCO Anniversary to Nora - it's been a treat getting to know you!
