Quality of Life Restored with Two New Knees

"Just a brief word to tell you how pleased I am with the outcome of my two knee replacements. One last July and the other one this May.

Surgery, after care and therapy went extremely well. I am back playing tennis, riding my bike and on my knees in my garden.

My quality of life has been restored!

My appreciation and thanks to you and your staff for the excellent, friendly and professional care you all provided."

-Very truly yours,
Bernie Mraz

Our website is full of testimonies like Bernie's - patients who are living pain-free lives. You can read them here. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to send us photos and stories for our office "Wall of Fame." We invite you to share your success story too, just hit "Reply!"

Stay Informed

In our July 1 newsletter we discussed why a good night's sleep is important to pain management. Be sure to add news@zehrcenter.com to your address book so you don't miss future issues. You can read past issues  in our archive.

Our website is chock-full of educational information too, and we are constantly adding short articles to our blog, where you can choose to read about hips, knees, general orthopaedics or catch up on our latest news.

While we take our work and your care very seriously here at ZCO, we do occasionally "cut loose!" One of those occasions was at a recent photo shoot. In addition to updating our professional head shots, we had a little fun with a "Charlie's Angels" pose, you can see the results below.

There are exciting things happening in the world of knee replacement. I encourage you to read up on Sensor Assisted Intelligent Orthopaedic Surgery on our website, and about Biomet's new Vanguard XP total knee replacement system, below.

If you have any questions about knee or hip replacement, please don't hesitate to call us 239-596-0100.

Warm regards,
Robert J. Zehr, M.D.
Advances in Total Knee Replacement

Over the recent years many surgeons have been able to reduce the surgical incision when performing a knee replacement surgery. Cutting less of the surrounding tissues in the knee results in less pain and a quicker recovery for you. Still, it is estimated that only 20% of surgeons actually use minimally invasive techniques routinely for a total knee replacement surgery.

A typical total knee procedure performed by Dr. Zehr over the years has been through a "minimally invasive quad-sparing approach" with a 4" skin incision.  The quadriceps tendon is not cut and the patella is not everted (turned outward), both are important in lessening the pain of this procedure.  Additionally, the use of a long-acting analgesic cocktail that is injected into the knee at the end of surgery, combined with an aggressive physical therapy program designed to get you up walking the same day of surgery, has shown to be one of the most important protocols for controlling pain and restoring function rapidly to the knee.

Dr. Zehr's fit and healthy patients are usually able to return to normal activities such as golf, biking, swimming, doubles tennis and long distance walking in just 4-6 weeks after surgery.

New Total Knee System Spares the ACL

Until now, all total knee replacement procedures required cutting the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), although some replacement systems allowed the surgeon to preserve the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) As one of the four main ligaments in the knee, the ACL is critical to the stability of the knee. Medical device manufacturer Biomet has recently introduced a new total knee replacement system that spares both the ACL and the PCL. Still undergoing clinical trials, the Vanguard XP system is expected to improve knee function for its recipients.

Surgeons using the new system are required to undergo additional training. In an interview with Orthopreneur magazine, Biomet's General Manager and Vice President of Global Knees Todd O. Davis explains why, saying, "We think that's important because we're actually changing the surgical philosophy. It's not a total knee with the ACL retained; it's an ACL retaining procedure."

Dr. Zehr will be using this new knee replacement system in eligible patients.
