Thermally Modified Lumber for Outdoor Living

It's hard to believe Spring is finally here. With warmer weather, our attentions turn to the outdoors. Gardeners repair and enlarge gardens, while many home owners take this time to either build a new deck or improve an existing structure.

Thermally Modified Wood is perfect for all outdoor applications. Rot and insect resistant, Thermally Modified Wood is the best choice for raised bed gardening. Unlike treated lumber, it is made without the use of chemicals and will not leach toxic substances into the soil; perfect if you are into organic gardening. Likewise, Thermally Modified Wood is also well suited for outdoor projects as it lasts significantly longer than treated lumbers, without exposing friends and family to toxins.

What is Thermally Modified Wood?

Thermal modification, in simple terms, is a process that utilizes heat and steam, under a partial vacuum. The process is patented, protected and proprietary. Depending on the species internal chamber temperatures can reach, or exceed, 450F. At these high temperatures the sugars, starches and other wood extracts are removed from the wood. With these materials removed the stock is rendered highly rot resistant. The “food” that wood rotting fungi require to breakdown wood cellulose is gone. Follow a few simple rules when you process thermally modified material and you will come to realize its many truly amazing benefits of stability, light weight, and extreme rot resistance.

What are the advantages of thermally modifying wood?
  • Durability: 25-year life span can be expected for exterior applications
  • Moisture Repulsion: The process seals the cellular structure of the wood, making it impervious to water and moisture
  • Stabilization: Swelling and shrinkage is reduced, as well as cracking and checking
  • Color: Consistent brown color all the way through to the very center of the board
  • Chemical Free: Chemicals are not used in the thermal modification process, which makes this product an environmentally friendly alternative.
