ASK GABA
Dear GABA,
Do you have any GABA bicycle jerseys? I see them on folks and want to get one.
The bad news is that we don't currently have any. The supply we ordered and sold a few years back is depleted. The good news is that we are talking about having some available for purchase in 2016. Stay tuned to Paceline for more information on GABA Bike Jerseys.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Have You Been Naughty or Nice
Happy holidays to everyone. I look forward to a great December dinner at the general meeting and peaceful riding throughout the remainder of the year.
Now, about that naughty and nice... As a group, we have a lot to be proud of. I spent some time at the TdT Expo GABA booth. Folks made a point of coming up and complimenting us on our rides-- especially, how nice the volunteers were. It was great to hear that people are having fun on a bicycle and consider GABA to be the gold standard on organizing a ride.
Most of you are doing great. Stopping at the stop signs and being courteous to others. We have not had any major complaints. As you know, our rides are on the open road. We do not barricade like the TdT. So that means we do have to be mindful of the rules. No more than two abreast. Signal your turns. Use lights (if you have them) in the daytime, and certainly at night. If you can safely do so, let the cars go by.
Next time you are at a bike store, or the general meeting, pick up a Share the Road Guide and read through it. You can even find a .pdf of the "Pima County Share The Road Guide" at www.Bike.Ped.Pima.gov (Maps/Resources). The traffic laws that apply to cyclists are in the back of the pamphlet (p. 42). There are no exceptions, unless we are directed by escorting police officers. Otherwise, make sure you know and comply with the rules.
It has come to our attention that Pima County officials have been observing our rides all year long. Recently we have reports of cameras and surveillance. Motorists know who we are because of the GABA route arrow signs. Let us continue to be the best at what we do and set a great example for all who are watching.
So for all who have been nice, thank you on behalf of all of GABA!
Eric Post, Esq.
GABA President

We hope you had a fun and fabulous El Tour de Tucson! Thanks again to all the Training Ride Leaders and Riders who came out throughout our 10-week El Tour Training schedule.
Special thanks, too, to volunteers Barb Sterling and Greg Yares who helped cover our GABA booth at the El Tour Expo. It's great volunteers like Barb and Greg that make us a friendly and active organization. Thanks, guys!

Two GABA Board Positions Still Open for 2016
GABA is still looking to fill two Board Positions. Being on the Board comes with a few GABA perks. To find out what they are, contact President Eric. He will be happy to tell you about the perks and give you additional information on the positions.
Vice President: This intimidating-sounding position is actually quite easy. We look to the Vice President to attend monthly GABA Board Meetings. In addition, the Vice President helps to recruit and coordinate the speakers for the monthly General Meetings. Lastly, in the rare event the President is not able to chair a meeting, the VP would fill in. Please know holding this position does not mean you will automatically be put up to be a future GABA president unless, of course, that's of interest to you.
Secretary: The Secretary attends monthly GABA Board Meetings and is responsible for recording and posting online the minutes of the meeting. In addition, the GABA Secretary records minutes from the annual General Meeting where officers are voted into GABA.
Our board meetings are held the second Monday of the month at the City of Tucson Ward 6 offices at 3202 E. 1st Street, Tucson, 85716 (near Country Club and Speedway).
If interested or upi need more information, click on the President Eric link above.

GABA's Fall Bike Swap

A little rain didn't keep GABA's Fall Bike Swap (11/15) from being the biggest and best ever. If you made it out, I'll bet you had a great time and scored a few great deals. Anything and everything you or your bicycle could ever need was offered for sale by our vendors. New this Swap, GABA members could make use of a selling area, free for a portion of the event.
We hope to see you out there, either buying or selling (or both) in Spring 2016!

Sweeping Silverbell by Laura Horvath
When Ride Organizer Colleen asked me if I was willing to "sweep" for the Silverbell Century (on 11/8), I reluctantly said yes. I was reluctant mostly because I didn't really know what I was getting myself into.
I'd volunteered for GABA supported rides before, but my involvement consisted of help at lunch and SAG stops. I'd been rescued by GABA sag on prior rides, so I knew a little of what would be asked of me.
Fortunately Colleen made it easy! She organized a pickup by all sweeps at the GABA Storage Shed. (Did you know GABA has a storage shed? It's at 1st Avenue, south of River.) She handed me a packet that contained the answers to more questions that I even had and packed up my car with all the supplies that I would need.
Zero-dark thirty on ride day found me heading out to my 1/3 of the 100-mile route to put out signage. I was fearful I would put a sign out the wrong way and send 100+ riders in the wrong direction. My fears were for naught because Colleen gave me a cue sheet, a map of the signs I was responsible for putting out, and all the signs in the correct order. (Thank you, Colleen!) Easy-peasy.
Once signs were up, I went up to SAG #3 to say hello, give them my cell phone number and steal a cookie. Then I parked along the route and waited for riders to arrive. As Sweep #3, my turf was the last 1/3 of the route, from Marana back to the start at the Jewish Community Center.
As the riders started to fly by, I went to work. My job was basically to drive the route, look after riders and help as needed. My first call to action was to help a rider fix a flat. He was a seasoned rider and fully capable of doing this himself, but I kept him company, and had a floor pump, which he very much appreciated.
I had brought some water with me and offered it to riders as they were riding by. Most had filled up at the SAG, but some were glad I could top them off and get them through to the next SAG stop.
By early afternoon, I met up with a gentleman who was having mechanical trouble with his bike. His trouble was that his derailleur somehow got caught in his spokes. He was riding with no trouble before he was stopped in his tracks. We determined that his riding for the day was done, and I shuttled him back to the JCC.
Late afternoon brought a call from SAG #4. They were out of water and asked if I could get some and bring it to them as soon as possible.
The remainder of the day went quickly, despite not having to do any further assisting. With word from Colleen, I picked up my signs and returned them to the Shed. I filled out and left my expense report (GABA reimburses your mileage) and was done for the day.
So why do I take your time and tell you all about my Sweeping Silverbell? Not because it was a super exciting, but because I found it to be a fun and rewarding day. I learned that "sweeping" is not a difficult or stressful job. I worked at being as helpful as I could for the riders, even if it was only waving as they flew by. GABA is always asking for volunteers for their Supported Rides. I tell you of my day in the hopes you will step up and volunteer to sweep for a ride or two in 2016. GABA could sure use the help. See you out there!

Back in the Saddle (BITS)
by Susan Reed
Back In The Saddle (BITS) was just a whole lot of fun. It was a 6-week series of rides for new riders or riders who hadn't ridden for a l-o-n-g time. Others were a bit concerned about riding on Tucson roads or in groups.
The first half-hour of each of the first four sessions was spent learning some useful skills, e.g. the A-B-C Quick Check, how to adjust brakes, how to take off a rear wheel, how to repair a flat, what to carry on the bike, and how to use a CO2 cartridge.
Our first ride was only about 8 miles on the Rillito River Path to get a feel for how comfortable riders were with their bikes. Each of the next five rides progressed in length; the last one being about 30 miles. By the third session we were riding on the bike boulevards, roads with bike lanes, doing some hill climbing, and seeing parts of the city and Pima County many of the riders had not seen before. Unexpectedly we ended up riding through the UA campus in the middle of the Homecoming parade!!
The focus of BITS was to help riders grow in their knowledge of how to share the roads with motor vehicles and share the multi-use paths with pedestrians and other cyclists as well as to grow their confidence and competence in their bike-handling skills. During each of our weekly rides we stopped several times to point out situations that could help riders communicate with motorists and each other and to be predictable, both of which will help riders stay safe. Some of the situations we encountered were:
- lane positioning
- not riding the white line
- riding in the right most lane that serves your destination, including staying in the the right most left turn lane if there are two or more left turn lanes
- four ways to make a left turn
- staying in the bike lane and not weaving in and out of the car parking lane, even if there are not parked cars
- how to cross vertical cracks in the road or train/streetcar tracks
- when and how to ride single file or two abreast
After our final session we enjoyed lunch together at Costa Vida at River/Campbell.
Soon we will be sending a survey to all BITS participants seeking their input which will help us improve our second BITS series which is scheduled to begin Saturday, January 23rd at Udall Park. Keep your eye on the GABA MeetUp calendar for details.
Many of the BITS riders from the first series have expressed interest in continuing to ride together. The survey results will help us determine what kind of GABA Day Rides can best meet the needs of these enthusiastic riders.
And, just a reminder that any of you can be a GABA Day Ride leader. The only requirements are:
- You must be a GABA member: you can become a member by signing up on-line at www.bikegaba.org
- You must be a GABA MeetUp member, and
- You must contact dayrides@bikegaba.org The Day Ride coordinator will provide you with the needed printed material electronically and be a resource to you as you navigate posting your first rides on our MeetUp page.
As always, you can direct your questions to either Wayne Cullop or Susan Reed via email at advocacy@bikegaba.org or by messaging either of us through MeetUp

GABA General Meeting
Monday, January 4, 2016
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Sharon Goldwasser and her husband Chuck Williamson combined their passions-- love of nature, cycling, and Irish music while cycling together in England and Western Ireland.
What happens when two cyclists with a love of nature and a passion for Irish music plan a trip to visit their daughter in England? For Sharon and Chuck - it was their opportunity to combine everything!
Sharon and Chuck will share their cycling journey in the city of Cambridge, England. They found Cambridge to be a city that is completely permeated by everyday bike culture. They discovered the power and perils of renting and riding city bikes.
They worked with a tour company creating a unique itinerary for a self-guided cycling tour in Clare and Galway- to Western Ireland. By day we cycled along rural, back roads that led us to our evening destinations. Specifically chosen to enjoy traditional Irish music sessions in local Pubs.
Join us for a peek at these two experiences of cycling while "across the pond", along with a bit of traditional Irish music on fiddle and guitar for atmosphere.
