ASK GABA

Dear GABA,

Where is the best place to get GABA information?

Two places actually. The first is our newly designed and beautiful website: gababikes.org

The other is our GABA Meetup Page.  If you're not a Meetup member, you need only Google GABA Meetup and sign on as a user.  It's free, easy and has information on our Day Rides, Supported Rides and General Meetings.

Have a Question:

Where In Tucson?

(see below for location)

Send in your "Where in Tucson" pics and we will print them in an upcoming Paceline.

President's Corner

This is your Paceline Editor filling in this month for busy Eric.
GABA has several openings on its Board starting in January 2016.

We are looking for the following:

Vice President: The principal responsibility of the VP is to book speakers for our monthly General Meetings. The GABA Board will assist. In addition, the Vice President will fill in for the President, should he be absent for a General Meeting, or Board Meeting.

Secretary: The Secretary attends all GABA Board Meetings and is responsible for recording and posting online the minutes of the meeting. In addition, the GABA Secretary records minutes from the annual General Meeting where officers are voted into GABA.

Day Ride Coordinator: The Day Ride Coordinator grants GABA Meetup permissions for day ride leaders, compiles ride hour statistics and oversees all GABA non-supported day rides.

If you have ever given any thought to volunteering with GABA on a larger level, these are three relatively stress-free positions that can help you get your feet wet. You would have to attend our Board Meetings held the 2nd Monday of yhe month at the Ward 6 offices, 3202 E. First St., Tucson, 85716.

Please contact Eric if you are interested, or think you may be, but would like more information.

NOVEMBER General Meeting
Monday, November 2, 2015
7 p.m.

Join Steve Wilson and Jon Kiser for stories and pictures from their epic 2,600-mile ride from Budapest to Istanbul through the Balkans of Eastern Europe.

Along the way they experienced 20 border crossings in 15 countries. From The Ukraine to Albania and Hungary to Turkey and everything in between. Lots of beautiful sights, friendly people and, of course, cold beer along the way. Come see a part of the world that Americans seldom venture to.

The challenges included 13 currencies, 9 languages, and 4 alphabets. Thank goodness for Google Translate!  After 53 hotels they rolled in to Istanbul for some well-deserved rest and sightseeing. Hope you can join us!

 (NEW MEETING LOCATION!)
The Tucson Osteopathic Medical Foundation
3182 N. Swan Road, Tucson, AZ

Directional Note:
It is in the plaza on the southeast corner of Swan and Camp Lowell. You will find it quicker if you turn EAST onto Paseo de los Rios. This street is only accessible from northbound Swan. The building says Tucson Osteopathic Medical Foundation on top. A picture is worth a thousand words so click the map below and see what we mean.

Event Contact:
Patrick L. Rinckey, 520-343-4962

The largest bicycle swap in the Southwest, GABA's Bike Swap in Tucson attracts over 5,000 attendees and more than 40 vendors biannually, with the Fall swap the larger of the two.

On the weekend before El Tour, bring your gear down to sell while looking through vendors' items. Vendors travel from all over Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas to bring you the best deals in bike gear.

New this year, GABA Members wanting to sell a few items get a premium location on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your GABA member card (available on our website under Member Profile) to participate.

Non-GABA Members wanting to sell may set up outside of the vendor area. This area is located on the north end of 5th Avenue near 6th Street. No vehicles may park in these spaces.

This year for the first time, individuals have the option to reserve a single 10-foot individual space. These spaces are available on the vendor grid off 7th Street closer to the action. Don't be left out if you're an individual with several items you'd like to sell or swap. Reserve the new standard space today to ensure you have a place at the Fall bike swap. No vehicles may park in these spaces.

DECEMBER HOLIDAY DINNER

Instead of our General Monthly Meeting, GABA will hold its annual Holiday Dinner at our NEW General Meeting location:

Tucson Osteopathic Medical Foundation
3182 N. Swan Road
(Southeast corner of Camp Lowell and Swan Road)

We are in the planning stages. However, we promise a delicious dinner & dessert along with music and good company. Also, no GABA Holiday Dinner would be complete without a tall tale or two of 2015 life on two (or three) wheels! We look forward to seeing you there!

WE RECEIVED THIS GREAT LETTER
AND WANTED TO SHARE WITH ALL

Hello my name is Shay and I would like to introduce myself. A few years ago as a 14-year-old girl I reached out to GABA requesting a donation to purchase a tandem bike so I could participate in a fundraiser. GABA took a chance and donated to a young girl with a dream.

Thanks to GABA, I now have a nonprofit 501 (C)(3) called Shay's Vision. The mission is to inspire visually impaired children and teens like myself to be physically active and productive members of their community through tandem biking, improving their overall health and well-being.

Shay's Vision provides young people the opportunity to experience the freedom and excitement that comes with riding a bicycle. In addition to cycling, Shay's Vision aims to inspire young people to go out and become involved in their communities.

Again, many thanks for all you do. Shay's Vision is greatly appreciative for the opportunity and support GABA provides to organizations, such as ours, that are small and oftentimes go unnoticed. We look forward to working with you in the future as Shay's Vision grows.

It's Just a Hill....
By Laura Horvath

So here I am writing about riding hills. Anyone who knows me, even just a little bit, is laughing right now. Please let me present my credentials for writing such an article. I have none unless you count that I can climb at a pace so slow that people wonder how I don't actually fall over.

All this being said, I wanted to pass along what I have learned in my relatively short time of riding a road bike.

When I first started riding I spent more than an embarrassing amount of time avoiding hills. Route planning was a serious process of screening out any potential trouble spots. Once on a long ride to and around Tucson Mountain Park, my riding buddy took me to the base of Gates Pass.  He informed me we were going "up and over" to get back to our cars. When I said "absolutely not," he said "then you will have to turn around and ride another 20 something miles to get back to our cars." "No problem," I said and swung around going back the way I came.

Then I read somewhere that "the only way you will get better hill climbing, is to climb hills." Hum, this is something I had never considered before.

So, I started climbing hills. Now, between us, the hills I started to climb probably wouldn't even register on your radar as actual hills. But I stopped avoiding them and set my mind to the task. It didn't take long before I noticed they were less and less daunting each time I rode. So off I went in search of bigger hills.

Soon it became time to pull up my big girl pants and ride up Freeman. I'd ridden down many times, so knew what I was in for. Between Speedway and Broadway, my head said "now, that wasn't so bad." The stretch between Broadway and Old Spanish Trail took everything I had!  My riding buddy got off and walked, but not me. I was determined to employ my excellent abilities of slow speed balance and crawled my way to the top.

Today, I barely notice what I called a hill before. I've even ridden up Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, all blessedly beautiful 22 uphill miles. I routinely get dropped on the short punchy hills, and steeper long slow climbs, but I'm out there and not avoiding.  My message to all you "hill-a-phobes" is to just do it. The game isn't just physical. There is a huge mental factor. Don't psych your self out when you see that hill in the distance. I have a newbie rider friend who unleashes a vile string of curse words that would embarrass a sailor the minute she doesn't like what she sees ahead. She is mentally finished before she even starts to climb. I tell her to relax, breathe, take it slow and steady. There is always a glorious decent on the other side! Happy hill climbing, all!
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
FROM GABA

Riders, remember the rules of the road when you are on a GABA ride.  Whether it is a day ride or a supported overnight ride, we are required to follow the same rules that apply to "drivers of vehicles." GABA is visible, the public is watching us. Every few months or so GABA receives a complaint from a motorist or pedestrian or outside observer that we were bunched up in a group, or passing other riders by going over the yellow line. Each of these are investigated. We have learned that some of the complaints were not GABA rides. We have learned that others were not violations of a roadway rule. Every once in a while, though, we have learned that the complaint is valid and that we could have done better. Let's be courteous and set the standard all others look to. Thank you. Enjoy your rides!
