ASK GABA

Dear GABA,
Why aren't there more shorter distance day rides?

Because we need interested volunteers to lead them.  Day rides are run by our regular GABA members.  Please consider leading a ride or two.  Then you will have exactly the ride you want, meet new friends with the same ride interests as you and earn GABA bucks every time you lead.

Have a Question:

GABA will be taking the month of July off.
This means there will not be General Member Meeting that month.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL

GABA'S annual Ice Cream Social has been moved to AUGUST.  Look for details in next month's Paceline!

SAGUARO EAST

Reminder to all who ride in Saguaro National Park East to obey all speed limit and traffic signs, just as you would riding anywhere else around town.  We have received a report of a rider who received a $125 speeding ticket within the park.

Roy Schoonover

Tucson and the surrounding area lost a great cycling advocate last month with the passing of Roy Schoonover. Much of what the cycling community enjoys today is because of his efforts. He was a member of the Bicycle Advisory Committee for many years before health issues caused him to retire.

He, Bill Adamson and Norm Land were early key proponents of the Pima County's vision of The Loop. The trail head on South Kolb was dedicated to him several years ago and was honored as a Tour of the Tucson Mountains dedication recipient. He helped get bike lanes, Toucans and Hawks in place improving the safety of cyclists. Roy helped get the RTA approved with its many bike specific projects. He pushed to get very competent people in key bike and pedestrian positions at city and county levels.

When Roy spoke to people about one of his many current projects, sometimes they would end up helping in some manner without ever agreeing to. He had a way getting everyone on the same page. He helped get bikes for the Primavera Foundation.

We hope that Roy is enjoying riding The Loop somewhere in the sky!

Greetings!

Hello, I'm your New GABA Paceline Editor.  I've stepped in to take the place of Bruce Tucker.  As his are tough shoes to fill, I will do my best to bring you GABA news along with interesting bicycling related news.  A reminder to all that this is your newsletter.  You are welcome to contact me and let me know what you would like to see in Paceline.  Also, a new feature will appear each month ASK GABA, where you are welcome to submit your questions.  I can always be reached at paceline@bikegaba.org I look forward to hearing from you.

 President's Corner

Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the warmer weather headed our way.  Remember to hydrate more and take your electrolytes.

Let's all think safety, including our roadway rules.  The hotter it gets, the less patient folks are so we need to set the standard for courtesy.  With the addition of the Meetup members, GABA is setting new records for the number of rides and the number of rider miles.  That means the fine citizens of Tucson know we are out there and they are watching.  So when the ride leaders remind us to follow the traffic rules and stop at stop signs and signal our turns, well, it just means that we are setting an example that everyone will appreciate.

If you have any ideas or requests for guest speakers at our membership meetings, let me know.  We hope to have the U of A cycling team come back again this year.  We had a request for a program on recumbent bikes so we're working on that for 2015.  And a big THANKS to all the folks who have taken time to come and talk to us in the past.  - Eric Post

Sonoita-Bisbee Spring Bike Tour

Saturday, March 21 - Sunday March 22

Blue skies and plenty of sunshine with temperatures in the 70's and 80's greeted GABA's 74 riders for the 2015 Sonoita-Bisbee ride.  As that weren't perfect enough, even the wind cooperated and stayed low for this 2 day annual ride held on March 21 and 22, 2015..

The ride encompassed 130 miles of beautiful Southern Arizona.   Day one took everyone east  on Hwy 82 over rolling grassland country toward historic Bisbee and our overnight. Day two traveled through Hereford, Palominas, Sierra Vista, Mustang Corners ending in Sonoita.  Groups of riders formed naturally, making it a great ride for newcomers and solo riders.

Ride Leader, Colleen says "what makes this ride special it the route.  Starting out early a.m. on Saturday was absolutely beautiful with rolling hills and no traffic.  The views were spectacular".   GABA is looking to do the ride again  in March 2016 with essentially the same route.  Look for ride announcements early in 2016 and give it a try.

  ROADSIDE BICYCLE ASSISTANCE

Imagine being out on your bike and getting stranded by a mechanical issue.  What would you do?   Well if you live in Seattle, Colorado and New Jersey and are an AAA Member, you can call for Cyclist Roadside Assistance.

The Bicycle service provided to members in these areas is offered at additional cost and operates similarly to their automobile roadside assistance.  Cyclists must make their way to a road to receive assistance, because service trucks can't get to isolated bike paths.   Once picked up, cyclists can ride up to 10 miles for no additional fee.

The program began in 2009 in limited areas.  In 2012 the AAA said they were going to 'test pilot' the program and based on their data collection, would expand services to other areas.   AAA Cyclist Roadside Assistance advocate, Tia Carter, says the problem is that we have seen very little in terms of expansion.  Rather than a nationwide initiative to implement, the decision to bring this service into an area is made by the AAA president at the local level.
Tia aims to change that by getting the word out on a petition.  She encourages all interested in signing the petition to visit:

The petition will be open for signatures thru December 31, 2015.  Tia says "The more cyclists, family and friends of cyclists that sign this petition the better as we want to get the full attention of AAA".

Tucson Ride of Silence on WED. MAY 20th

On May 20, 2015 the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not even aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (For the complete story go to rideofsilence.org

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month to raise the awareness of motorists, reminds police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.

GABA is once again proud to be an organizer of the Tucson event. We invite you to join us on Wednesday, May 20th gathering at 5:30 pm in Reid Park, West Side, Ramada #22, near Country Club. Our ride will be a 10 mile route at a 10 mph pace. Along with other Ride of Silence rides across the country and globe, our ride will be silent. The ride leaves at 6:00 pm with refreshments and fellowship following.

ADVOCACY UPDATE

Did you know the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association is the largest bicycling group in the state of Arizona.  GABA is a non-profit (501C3) organization whose mission is to:

  • Promote and encourage bicycle riding for recreation, fitness, and transportation by offering local day rides and multi-day rides in Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Partner with local organizations serving school-age children teaching bike and road safety skills and bike maintenance and repair.
  • Advocate for the rights of cyclists to be able to share the Arizona roadways with motorists with safety, equity, and respect.
  • Advocate for the development of an infrastructure in Tucson and Pima County that will support a Bike Friendly Culture and Community.
Sure, most everyone who knows about GABA knows about our bicycle rides, but not everyone knows the extent to which GABA  promotes bicycling advocacy in Southern Arizona.  GABA supports other organizations and events in our community such as BICAS, Cyclovia, El Grupo, Perimeter Bicycling Association, The Boys and Girls Club of Tucson and The Tucson Bicycling Classic.  In addition, we continually work with Pima County community leaders to help Tucson and Pima County be more bike friendly and a safe place for all to ride.

In the upcoming issues of Paceline, we plan to focus in on our advocacy and out reach areas to give you a better idea of what GABA does and how your membership helps support bicycling in Pima County.
