null Are You One of Our Next Campmasters?

Do you like the outdoors and camping? Would you like to help build and improve our weekend camping program at Cutter Scout Reservation or Boulder Creek Scout Reservation? If so, the Camping Committee is looking for additional candidates to serve as council Campmasters! The purpose of the Campmaster Corps is to provide an on-site resource to the units and/or groups using our local council camps on weekends and for short-term camping. The Campmasters are a select group of volunteers, who are chosen to serve in this capacity by the council Camping Committee. Campmasters are selected on the basis of their ability in several areas: outdoor skills, specialized knowledge of nature and conservation, and leadership skills. All Campmasters must have a record of demonstrated ability to get along with people, to lead and to act in an emergency. In addition, Campmasters must have a working knowledge of general Scouting program. This is a great opportunity to support our local camps. If you are interested in participating or have additional questions, please contact us at: [email protected].

null Newest Quartermaster - Brian Sweet
QM board chair Joshua Gilliland (second from left) congratulates Brian Sweet (center) on his
achievement as Stefan Geiger (left),
Peggy Gluck and Ken Shupe join in.

Brian Sweet of Sunnyvale, a member Sea Scout Ship 145, the Challenger, became a Quartermaster last week, the highest rank in the organization (It's the 'Eagle Scout award' for Sea Scouts). Last year, there were just 32 Sea Scouts throughout the country advancing to Quartermaster, compared with more than 55,000 Boy Scouts achieving Eagle. Sweet is the first member of his ship to achieve Quartermaster since 2002. To achieve Quartermaster, a Sea Scout completes all the organization's ranks, must lead a discussion on "participating citizenship" and submit a paper on the "World Brotherhood of Scouting," attend at least 75% of ship meetings and activities for 18 months and present a talk on Sea Scouting and complete a service project. In addition, the Sea Scout must complete 11 nautical skills and four electives plus get various approvals from adult leaders. His board of review follows. Sweet chose to build new rodent-proof garbage cans for the Port of Redwood City and lead a shoreline clean-up. He and his volunteers contributed 104 hours of service. His board was led by Joshua Gilliand, Western Region Sea Scout Commodore, with members Stefan Geiger of SSS Intrepid; Ken Shupe of SSS Sea Fox (Alameda Council); and Peggy Gluck, Eagle advisor of Redwood District South who represented the Pacific Skyline Council advancement committee.

Spring Wood Badge - Begins Mar 28
Wood Badge is the culmination of basic leader training for all adult leaders in Scouting - from Cub Scouting and Boy Scouts, to Varsity and Venturing. The course emphasizes development of personal leadership, team-building, and management skills. There are two parts to Wood Badge training: the Practical and Application phases. In the Practical phase, you will live the patrol method and experience the Scout program from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts to Venturing. Along the way you develop a better understanding of Scouting's youth, camping, and have lots of FUN in the process! In the Application phase, you will put to use the skills learned during the Practical phase by working your "ticket" - a personal plan you develop that should take at least 6 months and no more than 18 months to complete. Throughout the Wood Badge Experience, you are mentored by a staff member. Note: Spring Wood Badge is a non-Sunday course. Fall Wood Badge begins Aug 22, 2015. Information to come (not on website yet).
