Greetings!
"Breakaway is the greatest weekend ever!" shouted the high school senior as he was heading over to the Spring Center at Rockbridge. "Why do you say that?" I shouted louder than he did. "Because I can be myself and not be around all that fakeness at school!" Kids need authentic relationships, real relationships. How do we provide that at Cornerstone and Crossroads? Are we setting up an environment of trust and care that the kids can relate to, with wholeness and health, all centered in Jesus Christ? I hope we do this. Many would say we do.
How can we move towards this environment more and more? I think that the Youth Family (adult leaders) that call and invest time in students are part of it. I think a core or critical mass of kids that desire to build healthy community is too. I also think a local church that embraces it's young people is a big part too. The Church is the eyes, touch, heart, words of Jesus.
My advice to parents is to get their kids connected to a healthy Christ centered peer group the second they become teenagers. The 5th graders that connect in the summer before middle school begins have the best chance. The 11th graders that try to connect for the first time have a harder time. Making connections early is a good investment. I'm looking forward to teaching a parents class sometime soon where I'll share how connections can form. I see some things form my place I'd love to share.
A weekend like Breakaway is equal to a year of Sunday morning classes. Somehow it just connects and transforms some kids! We have some graded retreat weekends coming up that also make a big difference to youth in their spiritual lives.
When a teenager is driving for the first time, the transitions from the backroads to the highway is one of the tense times for these new drivers. That is true in transitions of adolescence too. Moving into middle school for our 5th to 6th graders can be helped with our Fusion Summer Camp. In addition, I hear all the time from college students that the Senior Florida Trip has been priceless in preparing seniors for life after high school. Junior Weekend gets students ready for the second half of high school and helps them develop leadership skills. 8th Grade Weekend helps unify students as a class and move up together into high school. I know these retreats and Fusion make a difference. I'd encourage you to make them a priority in your family.
I want to let you know about a few things that are developing in the Youth Ministry Office at TFCA. One is our Nehemiah Venture and the other is our Sticky Faith Initiative. The Nehemiah Venture will kick off this summer with a handful of first year college grads that will invest a year with the Youth Staff and Crossroads and Cornerstone to be trained and developed to be effective youth directors for our church plants. We are interviewing a few candidates this week to begin this summer to walk with us thorough the process of building up youth and building a ministry that can be transferred to other church settings. In the Scripture, Nehemiah rebuilt the wall to protect Jerusalem in 52 days. We hope to train up these young people to be ready to disciple young people and build up teams of youth ministers to rebuild the youth ministry wall, so to speak. We will need some host families and some support to make this happen.
The Sticky Faith Initiative is a result of a 7 year study of young people who have been active in youth miniseries in America but demonstrate a high dropout rate after high school. Over 50% of young people who grow up in youth groups like ours, turn from their faith, pulling away from a faith commuinity. Dr. Kara Powell of the Fuller Youth Institute has initiated cohorts to help churches address this issue more effectively. We plan on implementing some of the findings here at The Falls Church Anglican. One striking observation we have found is that if a teenager is connecting with an intergenerational congregation, he or she is far more likely to continue the faith than if he or she is just connecting to their youth group.
Both these new developments are worth keeping an eye on. If you would like to support either of them, please let me know.
