The WellMed Charitable Foundation's
Northern Hills Caregiver SOS Under Renovation
Family Caregivers, Seniors and other clients will benefit from the renovations now underway at the Caregiver SOS at Northern Hills, 14100 Nacogdoches Rd, Suite 120, in San Antonio, TX 78247.
"We are reconfiguring this space to make it more flexible for hosting classes, meetings and other events of various sizes," explained Joye McQueen, Caregiver SOS Program Manager. "The phones will be answered and responses made to email messages."
Regular programming will resume effective Monday, January 5, 2015.
Also, mark your calendars and save the date for our Grand Opening, planned for Wednesday, January 28, 2015. More details will be announced when available."
New District 7 Senior Center Grand Opening Planned The new Doris Griffin Senior One-Stop Center, which is a public/private partnership between the Wellmed Charitable Foundation and the City of San Antonio, will host its grand opening on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at 9 a.m. The Center is located at 8157 NW Loop 410, Suite 120, San Antonio, TX 78238. Congratulations to Doris Griffin, longtime advocate for seniors and the proposed namesake for San Antonio's newest Senior Center. Doris Griffin's name was approved at a public hearing in December and goes to City Council for final approval in January, 2015.
Ribbon-Cutting Held for Lopez Center Expansion
More than 600 people turned out for the ribbon-cutting of a 4,200 square-foot expansion at the Lopez Senior One-Stop Center in Northwest San Antonio on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014. The $464,000 project, funded by the City of San Antonio, provides much-needed space at the largest senior center in the Southwest United States, with more than 7,000 members. See more photos.

Texas Caregivers Need Our Support

November was National Family Caregivers Month, an occasion to recognize the 3.4 million Texans helping care for aging parents, spouses and other loved ones so they can remain at home - as opposed to costly facilities.
If not for them, the cost of health care would, undoubtedly, be far greater. Indeed, research has found that family caregivers provide unpaid care that's estimated at a staggering $34 billion a year in this state alone.
But it's not only the financial value of the care that's provided. It's the breadth and enormity of caregivers' daily tasks that deserve our heartfelt recognition. Read more.

AARP Texas:

With several Texas cities taking the lead, the Legislature faces pressure to do more to curb some of the worst practices of payday lenders-and AARP volunteers are actively involved in the effort. Angie Garcia, an AARP Texas volunteer, was part of a campaign that successfully urged the El Paso City Council to place limits on payday loans. Under an ordinance that took effect this year, customers cannot borrow more than 20 percent of their gross monthly income and the number of times a loan can be renewed is restricted. Read more.

LOW VISION EXPO MARCH 28, 2015
The 17th annual Low Vision EXPO will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 28th, at Colonial Hills United Methodist Church, 5247 Vance Jackson. The event is free and open to the public.
The EXPO features more than 40 agencies and vendors that provide services and devices for people with vision loss. Attendees can have hands on experience with adaptive aids such as closed circuit television magnifiers, hand held magnifiers, large button phones, and talking book devices. The EXPO also offers attendees the opportunity to speak with low vision specialists. For more information, please call the Low Vision Resource Center, 829-4223.
