Palliative Care Among Caregiver Summit Topics

Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Liliana Oakes will be talking at the Caregiver Summit at 9:15 a.m. on the topic of:

"Palliative Care in Relation to Alzheimer's Disease, Other Conditions, and Hospice"

 

Sandra  Liliana Oakes, MD, is a Geriatrics and Palliative Care provider for WellMed Medical Group in the Specialists for Health multi-specialty practice.

 

Dr. Oakes is a provider and specialist in WellMed's Bridges to Complex Care program and Palliative Care program, providing at-home interprofessional healthcare services to homebound seniors with chronic diseases or serious medical illness.  

 

She also participates in the largest Palliative care outpatient clinic in San Antonio, helping patients who are facing life-threatening illness, and managing their symptoms. The clinic in intended to provided interdisciplinary care for these frail patients, addressing their emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Read more.

Caregiver Summit Features the Latest Information on Alzheimer's Testing 

Family Caregivers and professionals working in the field of aging are invited to the Nov. 7 Caregiver Summit, featuring award-winning Alzheimer's Researcher Sid O'Bryant, Ph.D. Dr. O'Bryant, the Keynote Speaker, Is among a handful of scientists nationwide examining the impact of Brain Disease on Latinos. "An Update on Alzheimer's Disease Emerging Science: A Hope for the Future"  
 
Dr. O'Bryant, who has been working on a test for Alzheimer's disease that may soon be used by primary care physicians nationally, will cover this work as part of his presentation. The 2014 Caregiver Summit is sponsored by the Caregiver SOS program of the WellMed Charitable Foundation.

Set for Friday, Nov. 7, the Summit will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Whitley Theological Center at the Oblate School of Theology, 285 Oblate, San Antonio, TX.

  


REGISTRATION 

There is no cost to participate but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
Free Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available for Nurses, Social Workers, and Licensed Professional Counselors.

Rachel Duer, with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, will discuss the important topic of elder abuse and ways to prevent it. Elder abuse is an increasing problem in our society, and it is everyone's business to report situations of abuse to Adult Protective Services (APS). Caregivers face the heart rendering decision of taking the care keys away from elderly parent whose driving behavior has become a danger to themselves and others.
