The Medicare Prescription Drug program gives you a choice of prescription plans that offer various types of coverage.

You may be able to get extra help to pay for the monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and co-payments related to the Medicare Prescription Drug program. However, you must be enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan to get this extra help.

What Is This Application?
This is an application for Extra Help and does not enroll you in a Medicare prescription drug plan. Read more.

The local Area Agencies on Aging have staff that can assist individuals 60 and older with Extra Help applications. The article above provides a link to Social Security, but sometimes our seniors need "a little Extra Help" when completing the application. Our certified benefits counselors are available to provide information, counseling and advocacy to seniors about public benefits, entitlements and legal rights. This service is conducted on a one-on-one basis in person or over the phone.

The Bexar Area Agency on Aging and the Alamo Area Agency on Aging serve seniors in a 12-county region that includes Bexar.  Below is a website and phone number for fugure reference.

OASIS Seeking Volunteers for Tutoring Program

Volunteers needed for OASIS tutoring program

One hour- one child - once a week

Would you like to make a life-long difference in the life of a child who is struggling to read? Become an OASIS tutor and help an "at risk" child in first, second, or third grade improve reading skills and build self-esteem.

The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program, which began 21 years ago in San Antonio, pairs an older adult with a child in grades 1-3 to promote success in reading.  Older adults who are 50 and older are needed in Northside, San Antonio, Alamo Heights and Edgewood ISDs.

Volunteers will spend one hour a week with the same child throughout the school year.  No prior teaching experience is required and hours are flexible for vacations and appointments. Over 75 participating schools; tutors choose the school in which they wish to tutor.

The San Antonio OASIS is holding a Tutor Informational Session on Aug. 28th, 1 to 2 p.m., at the OASIS Center at Morningside, located on the corner of St. Cloud and McNeel.  No obligation; just information. The two-day tutor training classes will be held:  Sept 4 and 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Training class will be held at the same location. You can do something fun and meaningful - read to a child at an elementary school near you! To register or for more information, call OASIS at 236-5954. Gloria Jennings is Intergenerational Programs, Coordinator/ Tutoring Coordinator for San Antonio OASIS.

Important Information from Social Security
Social Security Extends Access to Benefit Verification:

Multiple Options Available

The Social Security Administration announced that local Social Security offices would continue to provide benefit verification letters until further notice.  Providing services when and where the public needs them remains central to Social Security's efforts, while continuing to encourage federal, state, and local agencies to take advantage of Social Security's data exchange programs that can serve customers more efficiently and effectively.

"We appreciate the feedback from members of Congress, our community stakeholders and agency partners. We want to ensure that we meet the needs of our customers in a way that is convenient for them and also cost-effective and secure for all," Acting Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin stated. "I believe that government agencies can work closer together to assist our mutual customers."

Over the last few years, Social Security has invested in technology that allows most government agencies and many other organizations to verify their clients' Social Security benefits electronically without requiring them to visit a local Social Security office.

"We recognize that some members of the public may require in-person assistance and we will have a presence in local communities," said Acting Commissioner Colvin. "We also want to ensure that the public is aware that they can access many of our services without going to a local field office."

Members of the public with Internet access can obtain benefit verification information by creating a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

Vote for Fund Award

Humana Communities Benefit Program

In its inaugural year in San Antonio, the Humana Communities Benefit money-icon.gif program will award a $350,000 grant to an eligible nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization focused on promoting healthy behaviors and building healthy relationships in the community.

Also new to this year's program is the online community vote. Your vote will count for 20 percent of the nonprofit's total score and will be incorporated into the final round of the judging process, when a panel of community leaders narrows the finalist down to one winning organization in each city.
