Welcome to the July South Texas Eblast from the WellMed Charitable Foundation's Caregiver SOS Centers. Information is featured here from the areas surrounding Corpus Christi, Harlingen, Hidalgo County and McAllen.

It takes a lot to beat the summer heat in South Texas. Sign up for some of the many interesting, useful, challenging and fun classes, training sessions, and activities below, most held in cool, comfortable and air conditioned facilities. Learn while you are "kicking back and chilling out."

"What is Palliative Care?" with Liliana Oakes, MD
Dr. Liliana Oakes, Geriatrician and Palliative Care Specialist, will discuss the field of palliative care and how it differs from Hospice care. Of special interest is a discussion on the benefits of palliative care for patients and family caregivers. Listen to this noted expert in the field on this vital topic.

"Managing Health Care" with Kay Paggi, Certified Care Manager
Tips and cautions about how to successfully navigate the challenges of working with the various segments and medical professionals within the often confusing health care system when you are the person responsible for caring for an older adult. There are specialists available who can help you get the best out this system to benefit your care recipient.

"Know the Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease" with Ginny Funk, Alzheimer's Association Associate Director Programs and Advocacy
There are 10 warning signs of Alzheimer's Disease. If you or someone you know are experiencing any of these signs, please see a doctor. Early diagnosis gives you a chance to seek treatment and plan for the future.

'Beat the Heat' Cooling Centers Hosted by the 

City Senior Centers and Reliant Energy are Now Open

 

Corpus Christi Senior Community Services in partnership with Reliant Energy are hosting the 'Beat the Heat' project. This marks the 5th consecutive year that Reliant Energy Cooling Centers provide places for South Texas residents to escape the heat, stay cool during the day and minimize their home electricity use.

 

Project representatives recently announced the summer assistance program and details about heat relief at a press conference at the Lindale Senior Center. Read more.
