These hour-long phone-based sessions are provided courtesy of WellMed Charitable Foundation, and are designed to connect family caregivers to experts with helpful information and other caregivers, with needed emotional, educational and social support.
The sessions can be accessed from anywhere via your phone: no need to get dressed up, find transportation, or get a sitter.

Several Stress-Busting Programs Scheduled
|
 The Stress-Busting Program is designed to improve the quality of life for family caregivers who provide care for persons with Alzheimer's disease or other related dementias by helping them manage their stress and cope better with their lives. The Stress-Busting Program was developed through research conducted by Dr. Sharon Lewis at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Caregivers who have participated in this program have reported significantly lowered stress, depression, and anxiety as well as improved quality of life. They have also reported improvement in their ability to relax and manage stress and an increase in their self-esteem. The ProgramThe program consists of 90-minute sessions that occur once per week for 9 weeks and is conducted in a small group setting with two trained group facilitators. Participants are provided with many resources, including a handbook covering class material, a meditation CD, and a relaxation strategies DVD. Caregiver "Hands-On" Care Coaching Available
Family members and friends may over time or suddenly may find themselves responsible for providing unpaid care for someone. In either case, few are prepared for the responsibilities, especially in cases where medically related care is required. With Hands- on -Care Coaching and Training, family caregivers can be better prepared to provide care that will keep the care recipient at home longer and avoid repeated hospitalizations.
The Bexar and Alamo Area Agency on Aging at Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) are offering FREE interactive home health coaching and training for family caregivers. Classes are offer in a group setting, maximum participation of 15 family caregivers per session. Anyone who is providing unpaid care for a friend or family members of any age with any disability or chronic illness may attend the training.
Topics include:
*Lifting *Bathing/Dressing *Transfers *Wound Care *Medication Management *Chronic Illnesses *When to Call 9-1-1 *Home Safety *Skin Care and Pressure Sores *Mouth Suctioning *Common Catheter Complications and more.

Alzheimer's Center through January 31st, 2014
Grace Place offers Bexar county residents a non-profit, licensed Alzheimer's & dementia adult day activity center year-round. To relieve stress, families can seek respite allowing them to better manage the tasks of juggling family and work-life balance.
There are convenient locations on the Northwest, Northeast and downtown San Antonio area. Caregivers are invited to visit the center, or can call to schedule a time to visit one-on-one and learn more about how the program can meet their needs.
Grace Place provides activities for participants that work with their abilities and comfort level. Some activities include:
- Arts and Crafts
- Music Therapy
- Socialization
- Fitness (such as Sittercise)
- Dominos
- Trivia and more
For as little as $34 per full day or $25 per half day families feel safe in knowing that their loved ones who suffer from dementia are in good hands.
