The treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease has been very beneficial in slowing decline for some time. Treatment stabilizes some activities of daily living. There are five suggested activities to keep the normal brain functioning as we age and help slow ongoing memory loss and dementia. Dr. DeVere will discuss these during this session. Dr. DeVere's motto is "the glass is half full, not half empty."

From Christian Senior Services:

Companionship Services Looking for Volunteers

When seniors are unable to leave their home, days become long and seniors start to feel isolated. Too often, isolation can lead to depression and potentially worsen a senior's health condition.   The emotional toll can be detrimental to not only the homebound senior, but also to their caregiver who because of work or proximity of residence is not able to spend every waking hour with their loved one.

This is why Christian Senior Services is proud to deliver Companionship Services, where volunteers are paired with homebound seniors to provide much-needed friendship just a few hours per week.

One such pairing is Sharrell (pictured left) and Peggie (pictured  right) who are both enrolled with Christian Senior Services' Companionship Services. Though the pair has only known each other since being paired in September of 2012, if you met the two, you would assume they have been friends for a lifetime. "I thank the world of this program - it's just been a great thing," replied Peggie, when asked if she was happy with the service. "Sharrell says 'I call my friend [Peggie] because I know she'll lift my spirits,' but oh my goodness, [if she only knew] it's just the other way around."

Being a volunteer companion can be just as rewarding for the volunteer as it is for the recipient. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer a few hours per week to provide friendship to a homebound senior, please contact Program Director Patty Guajardo, (210) 599-7405, option #4.
