Healthcare Professionals, Family Caregivers Invited

To the Alzheimer's Educational Symposium 

 

The Alzheimer's Association San Antonio & South Texas Chapter, in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the South Texas Geriatric Education Center, and the Renaissance Behavioral Center (along with the planning committee) will host a FREE educational symposium for the professional community on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the symposium will end at 4:30 p.m.  

 

Nationally recognized speakers will present on such topics as: Alzheimer's disease, diagnosing guidelines, behaviors, latest research and clinical trials, ethics in delivery of services and diversity, as well practical resources available for all caregivers, persons with dementia, and stress management for family caregivers. A common misconception about the aging brain is that there is nothing that may be done with regard to memory and that new information cannot be learned. Often simple lapses in memory or decline in recall speed are mistaken for dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease. This lesson will provide helpful information about memory function and strategies to help improve it.

New WCF Senior Center Planned for McAllen

Seniors age 60 and above  will benefit from a new Senior Center
Caregiver SOS Logoopening soon in McAllen. It will be located at 1301 E. Fern Ave. Sponsored by the WellMed Charitable Foundation, the Center membership is free of charge.  

 

Programs and features will include:   

  • Caregiver Services
  • Support Groups
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Board Games
  • Bingo
  • Exercise Classes
  • Cardio Exercise Equipment
  • Community and Resource Assistance

  1. "Stress Busters Program" -- Evidence Based program for family caregivers to loved ones with Alzheimer's/Dementia (Begins March 20,2013). Click on flyer for printing/posting.
  1. "Caregiver Support Series" -- A series of educational topics in a support group setting for family caregivers. Every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month, beginning March 22..
  1. Stroke Support Group  -- SOS Harlingen partnered with H.O.P.E (Haven Offering Patient Encouragement) to provide support for family caregivers and their loved ones who have had strokes. There will be breakout sessions for caregivers and recipients.
    • April 10, 2013, at 1:30 pm (every 2nd Wednesday of each month).
