Holiday Tip

Christmas Tree

Never pour grease down the kitchen sink drain, this will help to avoid clogs.  Place grease in a can or other receptacle and dispose of in the trash.  Grease that has congealed on pots and pans can be wiped off with paper towels and thrown in the trash.

Keep a grease vat in your kitchen to pour all used cooking grease into.  Grease is a big reason that kitchen drains slow and eventually, stop up.

Even the harshest drain cleaning products tend to not be a match for a heavy grease clog.  The grease you save in the vat can be formed into balls and rolled in bird seed for wonderful winter bird feeders.

Congratulations!

Thinking of buying plumbing fixtures?

-Porcelainized cast iron is an extremely durable and attractive finish for sinks and tubs and can keep warm water for long periods of time.  It's extremely heavy, however, and a tub may require extra floor support.

-Enameled steel doesn't wear as well as cast iron but is especially good for remodeling because it's light enough to move easily.

-Stainless steel is light, durable and unaffected by household chemicals.  Used primarily for sinks, it tends to collect spots from hard water and soap residue.

-Vitreous china is easy to clean and has a lustrous surface but can crack or chip when struck.  It's traditionally used for sinks and toilets.

-Fiberglass-reinforced plastic can be molded into novel shapes, but abrasive cleaners may cause damage.  Many less expensive tubs are made of this light material.

-Cultured marble is an inexpensive alternative to the real thing.  It looks good, but abrasive cleaners may damage the finish.

Winter Tips  Snowman

1.  Make sure all your garden hoses are disconnected at outside faucets.

2  If you have a separate shut-off valve inside for your outside faucets: turn valve off (clockwise), and open faucet outside to drain line.

3.  On super cold nights, open your kitchen cabinet doors under the sink. . . .this little extra heat goes a long way when we are experiencing freezing temperatures.
