I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
And in His word I do hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
More than those who watch for the morning-
Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.
   Psalm 130:5-6

This Psalm expresses a deep desire for the Lord's coming. This is what the Advent season is all about. Here at Second Pres we celebrate this season of waiting with many worship traditions. Each week we light an Advent candle, waiting until Christmas Eve to finally light the Christ candle. We decorate the church with greenery and lights, awaiting the arrival of the Light of the World.

On Sunday, we will come together for our service of Lessons and Carols. This service is exactly what the title suggests. We hear from
the Word of God (lessons) and sing carols and hymns. Ephesians 5:18-20 tells us: "...be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."  During Lessons and Carols we do this together. Choirs of all ages, soloists and instrumentalists and the entire congregation join in the songs of Advent.

Sunday, we will focus on waiting for his coming. The entire Bible in some way expresses waiting from the fall of humanity when God promised one who would come to save, through the whole Old Testament when prophets foretold the coming of the Messiah, to the New Testament and the waiting for the Second coming of Christ. A dramatic reading will be woven through the service. Scriptures will be read. The choirs will sing of the Christ child to be born, and we all will sing "songs and hymns...making melody in our hearts to the Lord." As we sing Joy to the World at the end of the service, we will express our prayer: Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing.

The 11:11am service will begin with congregational worship
focusing on waiting for Christ's birth. Then, the children's choirs will share in word and song the Christmas story. Experience the simplicity and yet deep mystery and awe-inspiring miracle in the retelling of Christ's birth. Consider spending the whole morning in worship, in anticipation, in celebrating the Advent season.

Giving Thanks Always!

Dr. Judy Webb
