Dear Friends,

Are you ready for Christmas? I don't mean: Are you done
shopping? Is your tree up? Are your lights hung? Have you decided what you're making for Christmas dinner?

Long before we started counting down the number of shopping days until Christmas, the church celebrated Advent as a way of getting ready for Christmas. The name Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means "coming." Advent is the four Sundays before Christmas, and is a time of prayer and reflection as we prepare to celebrate the coming of God into the world. But Advent has a dual sense of anticipation. As we prepare to celebrate the coming of God in Jesus Christ, we also look with hope toward the time when Jesus will come again to make all things new. This means Advent is a time of hope and anticipation. It's a time of looking forward to God
coming into the world.

So how can we use Advent to be spiritually ready for Christmas?
  • Make worship a priority. Worship Director Dr. Judy Webb, the worship planning teams, and the various musical and choral groups in the church have been hard at work preparing for worship this Advent. They've made a deliberate choice to focus on Advent music instead of Christmas music, so that we can reflect on what it means to anticipate and wait for God.
  • Make relationships a priority. Spend time with God. There is a schedule of daily Scripture readings for Advent available here. Spend time with your family, friends and church family. I would love to see you at Advent Dinner (5pm on Wednesday, December 5, in Fellowship Hall) or the Live Nativity (Friday, December 14, from 5-7 pm).
The Pulse and ePulse will detail all Advent activities at the church, but I want to let you know now about Christmas Eve services.
Services will be at 5, 7 and 9pm. The 5pm service will be designed for families and will feature the Cherub, Covenant and Carillon Choirs. The 7pm service will have a slightly contemporary style and feature the Chancel Choir. The 9pm service will be more traditional in style and feature the Chapel Choir.

During December it is easy to feel like the primary ways we prepare for Christmas is to shop, cook and decorate. This Advent, prepare your heart for Christmas.

Grace and peace,
Andrea
