MSJ JUNE 2015 NEWSLETTER

MSJ '14 Graduates were awarded 2.2MM in college scholarships, which averages to $142,280 per student! Saint Michael's College offers MSJ graduates enrolling at the College an automatic $20,000 scholarship ($5,000 per year). Up top five MSJ graduates per year are also eligible for two free years of tuition at the College of Saint Joseph!

MSJ Is Proud to Present the Class of 2015!


Joshua Robert Wasilewski, son of John and Katie Wasilewski of Belmont, Vermont, is this year's valedictorian! He is also the proud recipient of prestigious scholarships, such as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal Award, the Rochester Institute Computing Medal Award, the Clarkson Leadership Award, and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Presidential Scholarship. He has had the fortune of representing MSJ at the 2014 Green Mountain Boys State as well as being an active member of the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminars. Joshua also participated in the Governor's Institute of Engineering Program at UVM. He is a member of the MSJ Student Government, the National Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society. Josh's passion is baseball; he has played for MSJ since his freshman year and has been a member of two teams who have played for the state Championship twice during this time. As team Captain this season, Josh hopes to help his team achieve a 3rd trip to Centennial Field this year. During the summer months, he continues to play baseball for the American Legion Lakes Region team. Joshua is the 2015 recipient of the University of Vermont Green & Gold Scholar Award, and he will be attending UVM in the fall of 2015. He plans on pursuing a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and hopes to travel abroad where he can implement his knowledge and studies with local cultures.


Sally Hogan, daughter of Patrick and Penny Hogan of West Rutland, is this year's salutatorian! Sally is the Treasurer of the MSJ National Honor Society, a member of the National Art Honor Society, President of the Outing Club, Art Director for the MSJ Drama Department, and was Co-Captain of the MSJ 2015 Division IV Champion Girls basketball team. She was selected as a member of the Southern Vermont Senior All-star basketball team and was chosen to participate in the Twin State Girls Basketball game; she is a member of the varsity tennis team as well. One of her favorite activities at MSJ is working on the school yearbook, and she was appointed editor this year. Sally is a Daughter of American Revolution Good Citizenship Award winner and the recipient of the regional GE Star Scholarship Award. She has been a tri-scholar athlete while at MSJ, Student Director of the Halloween Float project, participated in Scholar's Bowl, has been a member and supporter of the cross-country team, and has participated in softball. Sally has volunteered well over a hundred hours of her time toward community service projects during her high school career. For the past three years, she has been a member of the Heritage Family Credit Union Student Advisory Board as well. An exceptional artist and writer, Sally will be attending Elmira College in Elmira, New York on a full academic scholarship in the fall, where she plans to study Literature and fine arts.

 

Eric DeBlasio, the son of Dominic DeBlasio of Castleton and Julie DeBlasio of Rutland, is this year's recipient of the Mount Saint Joseph Academy Veritas et Puritas Honor! Veritas et Puritas stands for "Truth and Purity." Eric is a member of the National Honor Society, a three-sport athlete in football, indoor track and baseball, and he was selected as Captain in all three sports his senior year. He is the current President of MSJ's student body, a member of the Academy's Scholar's Bowl team, and participates in the concert band. As an Eagle Scout, he has been active in the Boy Scouts since 2008. He was also recognized as a National Football Founders and High School Hall of Fame Honoree. He regularly volunteers with the MSJ Athletic Association, has filled in as Athletic Director, and as an altar server at church and chapel. Eric will be attending Saint Michael's College in the fall, where he plans to study Accounting.

 

STUDENT NEWS


National Honor Society Update!


Students have been very busy this year with various community service projects, including organizing a bulletin board in the main lobby to honor our veterans on Veterans Day and hosting a toy drive to benefit the Rutland County Women's Network and Shelter during the Christmas season. National Honor Society had the privilege of inducting juniors Claire DiIonno, Heather McManus, and Lorie Dorce and senior Reyna Viala as new members this year. The students were especially blessed to have seniors Bethany Miglorie, Devon Gilbert, Eric DeBlasio, Josh Wasilewski, Kyle Anagnos, Kyle Diezel, Kyra Traska, Megan Eaton, Nate O'Shea, Reyna Viala, Sally Hogan, Sarah Harvey, and Joe Loveland as members this year. These twelve seniors truly exemplified the National Honor Society's four core values of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Congratulation to our graduating seniors!

Mounties Make Final Four in Baseball Once Again!

The men's baseball team had another fantastic season, with the boys making state semifinals! The Mountie baseball team has made the baseball semifinals or finals in each of the last four years! Congratulations to the team and their coach Jake Downey on their continued success at Saint Peter's Field!


Kyle Diezel Receives Basketball Scholarship!
2015 graduate Kyle Diezel was one of only eight students in the state to receive a college scholarship from the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association. Congrats Kyle!

Seventh Annual Honor Our Past


This year's Honor Our Past event will be held at the Rutland Holiday Inn on July 23rd, with cocktail hour beginning at 6pm and dinner beginning at 7pm. The honorees are:
Diane Valente Liscinsky (MSJ '55), the receptionist and administrative secretary at MSJ for a number of decades. She was also a CKS and MSJ parent and, with her late husband Bob Liscinsky, owned the Carriage Room, a wonderful gathering place for friends of the Mount. Dr. William O'Rourke, Jr. (MSJ '49) was also an MSJ and CKS parent. He served on both the MSJ and CKS School Boards, organized the original Green Wave Golf tournaments, and was team physician for many years at MSJ football and basketball games. Father Richard Tinney (MSJ '57) has ministered to the people of Vermont as a priest for over fifty years! He was a member of the MSJ School Board and continues to be an active supporter of Catholic education. MSJ Congratulates Alum David Ribbans

 

David ('08) received an MS in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Mechanics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst earlier this year. He has joined the New York City office of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH), a nationally-acclaimed engineering firm. Great job, David!

MSJ Class of 1955

will hold its 60th Class Reunion on Saturday, July 25th at MSJ and the Rutland Country Club. On July 24th, optional events that are not officially part of the reunion include golf and an informal evening gathering. MSJ Class of 1950 - 65-Year Reunion!

Plans are underway for the 65th class reunion to be celebrated on Saturday, August 22nd. Plan to attend the 5:15pm Mass at Christ the King Church in honor of those classmates no longer with us, and then move on to the elegant buffet dinner at the Rutland Country Club on Grove Street. MSJ Class of 1965 Golden Graduation & 50th Reunion!

Friday, June 5th: Golden graduates are welcome to attend the 2015 MSJ commencement ceremony. They will be presented with Golden Diplomas. Following the graduation ceremony, the '65 class members will gather at the Rutland Country Club for hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

Saturday, June 6th: There will be a 4:30pm memorial mass for deceased classmates at the MSJ Chapel. At 6pm, there will be a reunion buffet dinner and dancing at the Rutland Country Club. Please contact Esterina Bergendahl at [email protected] for more information.
 

MSJ Class of 1975 - 40-Year Reunion!

Saturday, August 1st: There will be heavy appetizers and a cash bar at 6pm at a Lake Bomoseen Restaurant to be determined. Casual attire is more than acceptable. If you plan to attend, please email Jo-Ann Rotella Ballard at [email protected].

MSJ Class of 2005 - 10-Year Reunion!
This exciting reunion has been scheduled for Saturday, August 15th at the Southside Steakhouse in Rutland, VT. Additional details will follow in the weeks and months ahead.
